I hope this is not too political. I haven't been to Sudan in 21 years, but I will never forget just how important the Nile was to everything there.

Sounds like Egypt and the Sudan are in denial.

I get a kick out of how the problem is the foreign countries gobbling up all the resources, not the leaders of the countries who allow that, to the detriment of their own citizens.

"Angel of the Lord, what are these tortured screams?"
And the angel said unto me,
"These are the cries of the carrots,
the cries of the carrots.
You see, reverend Maynard, tomorrow is harvest day
and to them it is the holocaust."

I couldn't hope but notice this paragraph.

Quote:
The Nile Waters Agreement, which Egypt and Sudan signed in 1959, gave Egypt 75 percent of the river’s flow, 25 percent to Sudan and none to Ethiopia. This situation is changing abruptly as wealthy foreign governments and international agribusinesses snatch up large swaths of arable land along the Upper Nile. While these deals are typically described as land acquisitions, they are also, in effect, water acquisitions.
I'll bet the Ethiopians were real happy with this agreement. I imagine the Sudanese and Egyptians were overwhelmed with thank you cards from Ethiopia.

It sounds like while this is a newer problem for Egypt, it's been a problem for region for quite a while.

They say the next world conflict will be over resources like water.

That is the Roseires Treaty. I remembered reading that for a my dissertation. The irony is that the Blue Nile comes directly out of a mountain lake in Ethiopia, and the White Nile has its origins in Uganda.
