| | | | No headlights on Interstate

A guy was driving behind me on the interstate with no headlights on. He had the dim yellow ones (blinker type), but not the actual headlights.
Isn't that illegal? What would you have done? I am a 20 year old ignorant kid that doesn't know anything, and would like to know.
Sorry for using up your time. Sincerely,
-Don Nguyen

| | | | If it was night, yes it's illegal. No, I wouldn't have done anything. Doesn't affect me in any way, let the cops take care of it if it's that big of a deal.

One of the cool things about the Batman movies is the Batmobile. It's really fast, and has a buncha weapons, plus a really cool afterburner.
If it were me and I was driving the Batmobile, I'd totally drive in front of the guy then slow down, so he could see the flames coming from the rear of my car. The cool thing would be that it would look even brighter because his headlights weren't on.

| | | | About 20 years ago I had an alternator fail on me at night while I was driving across the FL Turnpike. The car in front of me noticed that my lights were going dimmer as the miles rolled on so they made sure that I was close enough to them so I could see the road until there was finally an exit with a gas station.
They kept driving while I turned off. |

Presuming it was night time I'd slow down and let him pass, allowing double the braking distance to compensate for his lack of distance vision.

They kept driving while I turned off. | This is very cool - that someone recognized the problem, and did something about it. |

...often people don't realize their lights are off...many times, the highways are lit well enough that one might not notice immediately that his/her lights are not on.

| | | | I hate it when people drive with their parking lights on but the headlights off.
I hate it when it is gloomy and rainy and visibility sux and for some reason a lot of people do not think they should turn on their headlights. |

If it's the turn style switch, usually there's two steps. First is driving lights only (amber lights), and the second is headlights on. Same with the pull type switch, where the first stop is driving lights and all the way out is headlights. Now I'll admit, I find it annoying when I see that, but I'll also admit that I've done it before where I didn't turn/pull the switch all the way, and just the driving lights were on. As soon as I realized it, I turned the headlights on of course, but sometimes these things happen. While it is illegal, and definitely annoying (and in my opinion, unsafe), it easily could have been an honest mistake and one that was corrected soon after you got away from them. Like a previous poster said, just flash your lights to attempt to bring it to their attention, and then let it go. Just make sure you're safe and can see, and you're good. |

| | | | The guy might've already known his lights were off. He was driving about 30-40 miles on the interstate in a relic classic car, following people closely the whole time.

When I lived in Ohio, people with one headlight would follow close too.
