I think I've maybe been greeted, or at least acknowledged, by a greeter only a handful of times out of the hundred or so times I've been to a Walmart. I've certainly have never seen them grab a cart for someone or even offer to get them one. |

Especially the elderly ones that have worked the greeter job as a means to support their retirement. It's a bummer, but their aren't that many other jobs in other depts. |

And many seniors would be without health care coverage otherwise, so they depended on something like the door greeter job. |

There's not many things I hate worse than being greeted at the door of a store by someone who doesn't mean it, and only doing it because they can't find any other kind of work. I know where I'm going , I know what I want, and I don't want to be bothered.

While I am aware that creating a warm and inviting atmosphere makes customers more likely to spend more time in the store, and buy more items, I've never seen a Walmart greeter's job to be one of any real importance or practical value. I do not shop at Walmart often (Maybe once or twice a year.), but in most stores, it's usually difficult to find an employee to assist you, when you need one. I would rather see employees out on the salesfloor than greeters at the door.
In any case, it is unfortunate to see that this change is going to cost many people their jobs. |

In the few Wal Marts that I patron in my area, the greeters are usually elderly, and aside from any level of money made, that was probably the highpoint of their day. That's why it sucks.
Maybe it didn't make a lick of **** to you, but it did to them.

My most memorable interaction with a greeter was when I lived in Kentucky. There was an older white woman who worked as a greeter who would not say hello to black people. I could walk into Wal-Mart between two white people and she would say hello to the person ahead of me and the one behind while ignoring me. It was not exactly the end of the world, but since she was a greeter, I felt she should have greeted me. I never said anything to her or about her but once I had a return and then she was speaking to me because it is the greeters job to put tags on returns.
I ignored her and she was furious! I never answered her, but she eventually came and put a stamp on my return while I was in the return line. That story is always a bit funny to me because I am sure it never occurred to the old lady that I was simply treating her the way she treated me.

I'm sure they were low paying jobs, but when you have a mental disability or you're in your 70's you're not at some biotech company competing with MIT and Harvard grads for an engineering job.

People love that guy. I don't think it's going to go well here because there isn't really anything else he can do in the Wal-Mart. |
