No Pics No Bass NO CLASS (rant)

In an effort to improve the tone of discussions here on TB, I'd like to point out a pet peeve of mine.

When you post "no pics, no bass" or "no pics, no amp", you are basically CALLING ANOTHER USER A LIAR.

I can totally understand it in the classifieds, even though it could be worded more politely, but in the Amps and Basses forum... when someone says they just got a new oddball bass or amp and needs a little help, posting "no pics, no amp" without offering any help whatsoever is rude at best and antagonistic at worst.

It turns off new users who might not understand it's just good-natured ribbing.

So, the next time you're about to post "no pics, no bass" try to word it in less accusatory way. "I'd love to see pics" or "Got any pics?"

Nice...Kind of joke that has gone a little sour at times...Epically if you travel a bit like myself and you could be logging into to TB from god-knows-where.

i don't have a problem with it turning off new readers that don't get that it's meant as a joke. everytime i've seen it it comes across as a sarcastic little silly thing that was MEANT to be a sarcastic little silly thing.

hell, 3/4 of the time there's a smiley face right next to it.

Welcome to the Internet where people can say anything. A 12 year old kid can say they just got a SVT rig & Ritter bass & it sucks. If you got a new toy and want to brag, show it.

Actually, It's the fun, good manner humor that tends to keep me on forums like this. I think there are WAY too many protocols that are trying to be established, not just on TB, but all over the net. To all those that offend easy, I don't particularly want to dialogue on the net with you, much less in real life. The humor, and fun is what makes sites like this friendly, and not a Information - fact only website.

I guess it boils down to the tone of the response (which is impossible to decipher without a smiley), and the quality of the OP.

If it's a problem that needs to be diagnosed and a pic would help, or if someone's braggin' on some new gear, sure.

But unless we're dealing with a sociopath, or someone with a touch of the Asperger's, you can usually tell from the post if someone is sincere.

Just responding "no pics, no bass" is as inane as saying "First post!"

I have no qualms with making the request... I just think the knee-jerk response is off putting.

True, though. This is the internet, and you get what you pay for. To each his own. Just a pet peeve of mine.

Pffft Bigger fish to fry on here than if they show a pic or not. To be honest i hardly ever have since i cant get my phone and PC to upload and 'Im to lazy to care.

The bigger issues are the TBer who gang up on people on here or the ones who try to tear others down refusing to bend on an idea forcing their self proclaimed knowledge on all. We also have the ones when you are trying your best to help that come in and take over and talk down to what you said advising all to stay away from you.
I could go on but wont. I like Talkbass but like all web based things it has its problems and some mods need to step it up here.

True enough that there are bigger issues that are occasionally problems here on TB. My gripe is just that... a gripe.

Let me be the first to say that I think the TB mods do a kickbutt job. It is a thankless, thankless task. I used to be a web admin for a large forum in a past life, and I would have hung myself if not for the help of the volunteer mods.

I don't think it's that big of a deal. Anyone who's been around the block a few times knows that it's just a joke/fun way to say we want to see the bass. What bothers me more is members who know the rules and yet go into certain threads to fight when they know the thread will get closed because of their actions.

I think it's more that we're mostly gear whores and want to see more stuff! It's all meant in good fun!

Ditto! "No pics, no bass." has been on TB since forever and I have yet to see someone use it accusingly or snarkily.

I don't see what the problem is. I've never seen anyone get rude over asking for pictures of a bass/whatever, and even if they were, what does it matter? Are you really going to let it bother you that someone might not believe you have a bass because you didn't take the time to upload a picture?
