Nobody can explain this yet: haunted swing

Sign in to disble this ad
Here`s the story:
There`s a small town in my country named "Firmat". Sometime during last year a hammock started to swing without any explanation.

It gradually became a tourist attraction and many people went to the place to check the phenomena.
The city major decided to call scientists to check if there was a physical explanation (gravity, pressure, winds, electromagnetism, etc.) and after several tests, they came to the conclusion that there`s no physical explanation possible.

I usually don`t believe in this kind of things, but trust me that this one is real.

That swing is interesting, but not as interesting as some of the crazy links attached to that video.

still , it looks very " ghost-like " , and i can understand why someone
with no scientific background would believe this is a ghost ,
or at least some sort of " miracle " ...

Observing the video, the resonant angular frequency (the frequency at which the swing naturally twists, so to speak) is very close to the resonant frequency of the swing. See how the wind in the twist of the swing pushes in the correct direction most of the time. When the driver-frequency is close to the resonant-frequency, large amplitude oscillations occur. It's just a coincidentally tuned system.

I can't watch any of the videos (I'm at work), but I imagine that the explanation is similar to what caused the Tacoma Narrows Bridge to collapse in 1940 (mechanical resonance, like some others have mentioned).

To be clear, the statement that there was "no physical explanation possible" came from a UFO group (Vision UFO).

Without doing any experimenting myself the first thing that jumps out to me is a resonance of some sort along the lines of what ehque mentioned.

As I have been unable to watch any of the videos, I would not have known that.
