Nonsense in advertising...

Sign in to disble this ad
Example 1 - "Prices too low to print."

What a load of tripe that is, eh?

Often, a manufacturer restricts the prices that can be printed in an ad, therefore anything below MSRP really is "too low to print"

A distributor can mention that they have low prices, but when they're below MAP (minimum advertised price), they cannot advertise it.

Yes, that's correct. But it just seems pointless to me.

Well, when you have a licensed product, for example, Gibsons or Ricks, and maybe two stores in one region and a popular online distributor all have licenses, the point is to really irritate you.

Actually, there really is a point, but I'm too drunk to type it out.

There is an ad for ballpoint pens that is currently being broadcast on the radio that claims that the pen is question has is "the only pen that can give you the confidence to sign all of your important documents". Their reasoning is that the ink in this pen is scientifically designed to better cling to the fibres found in most kinds of paper.

So yeah. They're using fear and paranoia to sell even pens now...

Without the proper pen, how do you intend to stab the aliens in the eye when they come to get you?

This isn't entirely related, but the Shamwow guy TOTALLY got arrested last month, and it made me laugh really hard.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive...7092sham1.html

That was a while ago.

I met that guy once, and he is just as annoying in real life as he is on tv, even when not trying to peddle crap.

RMC Audio sells GK gear for below list prices but can't advertise those prices due to restrictions. So while it's slightly annoying to have to call or email them just to hear their prices, ultimately I saved a chunk of change by buying from them. Anytime I see "prices too low to print" it occasionally means I'm being BS'ed, but generally means that I can get a better deal than what I've seen posted elsewhere. So, I like seeing that phrase.

If you want to talk about nonsense in advertising, how about this one:

NEW AND IMPROVED!

Never mind that something can either be new OR improved but not both, what this phrase almost always means is that a product wasn't selling well or had some major flaw and had to be retooled. Not exactly a selling point for me.

Exactly, that's why I wear a bandolier packed with Peter Belt Red X pens.
