Finally, after living the unemployment hell for the past 16 months here in Phoenix and only about 5 interviews, I got a job offer and will be moving the family to Durham NC. Closer to family, awesome job. Gotta find a house. Make new friends, find musicians and places that have some good live music. Finally Finally Finally........

Anybody in RTP NC have any info to help an area newb?

good neighborhoods, ones to stay away from....etc

also need to find a cost effective way to ship my DB.

Well, I'm a bit far away to help with most of it, but if you get bored you're welcome in GSO - I'll be happy to give you the nickel tour (no charge) of the Roscoe shop and buy the first round at our local brewpub if you decide to visit an hour west...

I'm just about to move from NC (Winston-Salem) back to PA. It was a great time, and I got to hang at the Roscoe Shop as well with Gard.

Durhamite here! Though aside from visits, I havent been there in quite a few yrs due to military, but I think you will find it not too fast not too slow. The jazz scene was picking up last I checked, but you might do better looking there, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill.

Sorry, I'm not much on your original questions, but:

Winston-Salem, visit Wishbass. Steve's an interesting guy.

Creepiest thing I ever saw in my life, still get gooseflesh thinking about it. http://www.brownmountainlights.com/

Boone/Blowing Rock is probably just about my favorite part of the state so far...I love it up there.

As for the Brown Mountain Lights, man, I can even make out the wings beating on the insects in most of that stuff...looks just like night vision video of a helicopter. I'm sure there is a viable, logical explanation for the rest of it as well...pretty area though!

Yeah....I definitely want to get over and visit Steve as well.

I wonder if the Brown Mountain lights are a result of a nearby bassist that has found the all elusive "brown note" and thus causing the mountain to emit methane gas

7 year Chapel Hill veteran here, although I'm currently in the eastern part of the state.

Not to scare you, but there are some really bad/sketchy parts of Durham, especially downtown. I actually worked in Durham for a while, and I saw guns pulled on more than one occasion, and this was during the day and my commute!

Scary stuff aside, Chapel Hill & Raleigh are the scenes you want to hit. LOTS of great music coming out of Chapel Hill, and about 15 different venues to hear live music (no exaggeration.) Although there is a definite "Cooler Than Thou" vibe in Chapel Hill.

Raleigh has lots of great venues too, and probably more outlets for Jazz.

Oh, and the "No Handgun" signs you see posted in all the stores. Yes, those are real.

Welcome to the neighborhood!

Here in Phoenix it's legal to carry a loaded firearm on your hip. I've had a couple pulled on me when I first moved here. That's when I started minding my own business. Fortunately, my new job is around where the 40 and the 54 intersect. so it's kinda right between Durham and Chapel Hill.

I was just talking with my mother who lives in Raleigh and she said the same thing
