Those dudes are CRAZY! | Yep. And the above pic is Waimea Bay. The Eddie Aikai memorial surf contest is held there. It's a contest that they only hold when the surf reaches a Hawaiian 20 feet (about 40 foot faces). They haven't held the contest in 5 years. Looks like it's going to go this year.

| | | | How many surfers have been lost there? I can't imagine the fitness level those guys would need to just to survive a wipe out. And what about injuries they can sustain from being smashed into submerged coral? |

Most common injury is probably ear drum damage. Imagine going from the surface to 40 feet underwater in the blink of an eye. |

Do the swells last for a long time (a few days,...a week)? |

Swells can last anywhere from a couple of days to three weeks if you get several storms lined up behind each other. |

Do the swells last for a long time (a few days,...a week)? | A friend of mine left for Oahu today, but he was planning on going this week anyhow. He'll prolly have to wait a few days for it to calm down some. Big waves are plenty scary enough on their own, but over there you also have massive reefs everywhere that take away the "it's only water" mantra.
Anyhow, you can predict swell and wind conditions several days out pretty well these days, especially when you're talking wave trains a thousand+ miles long. A few of my friends were surfing at the OR coast today, which is also firing exceptionally hard at the moment. |

I'm taking the day off work tomorrow to go hit Sunset Cliffs in San Diego. Quote:

That crowd is pretty thick though. Not sure I would get very many waves. North Shore crowds are some of the heaviest in the business. Personally, I'd be more into surfing Jocko's or Chuns a little south of Waimea, or perhaps Sunset a little North of here. All are longer, more workable waves. The biggest waves I've ever surfed were probably a good 5-8 feet smaller than these waves. I've surfed easy 15ft waves at Blacks Beach in San Diego, and waves that were even bigger at Silver Strand in Oxnard. The waves were so big the repercussions when the waves broke were making the sand audibly shake. |

My dad's job takes him all over the world, and one of the places he gets to go every 3-4 years happens to be Hawaii. Since my dad does travel so much, he has tons of airline and hotel points that he gets to use. So my mom gets to tag along while he works all day. My mom gets to sit on the beach all day, so she doesn't mind it. The last two or three days my dad will join her.
No, I don't have any sympathy for them when they call. |

I tried it a few times when I lived up in the Bay (Steamers, if it wasn't too crowded, or Pleasure Point when Steamers was a zoo) and just didn't feel all that comfy on it, and I'm used to longboards (8' 4" Yater spoon, 7' 9" unknown-shaper twin-fin). I've been told that boards like these are wonderful for the North Shore and basically useless everywhere else...
