I know nothing of Paintball other than it hurts like **** if you get hit.
My friends have been asking me to join them, so what do I need to know to kick some ass? What type of guns, protection, etc?
I am all ears...share the knowledge my friends. |

And yes, it hurts like hell. For a good 5 years I had a nice circular scar on my left shoulder from a point-blank paintball shot.

I recommend using anything made by Tippmann, a 98 Custom or older Pro Carbine guns... they're bulletproof.
I wore long sleeves, pants, and a mask. That's all you need. You'll have welts, but its not too bad.

but- make sure they are strict on chronographing. sometimes they let sh*t rentals run hot, because they are, well, yeah... but if its ats acceptable velocity (been a while- 285? 265?)- but make sure its honest. buy good balls (or gear if youre going to get serious [i like the brand wdp {used many}]). proball is fun if you can lay down paint, because it doesnt break that much... hehehe...
but just match the bore of the paint to barrel and geta squeegee and a barrel plug and a good mask. and knee pads. if you dont slide and move fast, you are gonna get reamed bro.
dont be afraid, and just go have fun. you payed for it. its a blast buddy. |

I wore long sleeves, pants, and a mask. That's all you need. You'll have welts, but its not too bad. | The Tippmann stuff are a decent rental gun. Most places I've gone to use Tippman rental stuff. I would reccommend getting together with your buddies in a decent size group and going on a open play day. They'll usually take walk ons with rentals and group them together. That's better because you don't want to be playing against a bunch of guys with high end equipent. You'll just get lit up fast and get knocked out of the game. Which is no fun. The guys that play all the time all have super fast, super light, rapid fire guns with auto feeders. You're rental gun is no match for them. Also I would find a range with multiple playing areas. The places I play at all have woods base courses, like a fort in the woods and you'll play attack and defend on that fort. Other courses are just woods with a open "bunker" if you will with the flag at either end, other courses are more of an open "urban" style with plywood fetures and bunkers, then you have the speed courses that you would see on ESPN with inflatable bunkers and a real tight playing area. A good place will place you in a group with people of the same equipent and skill level and then you'll get a chance to play most if not all the different style courses. Go you'll have fun.
Also don't be wuss, it may smart when you get hit, you may get a welt, you may bleed, but whatever. It's all in good fun. To minimze this just wear long pants, long sleeves, ect.
Also wear a cup!! Seriously, I always do, you don't want to take one there without one on!

Then, go out in play, after you start playing frequently you won't even feel when you get hit. I played on a paintball team for a while and in competitions I would get shot, not feel it at all, then keep on shooting. The ref was not happy with me.
EDIT - Don't use cheap paintballs, its a good way to screw things up.

| | I'm a tumbler, born under punches | | Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Northern California | | | My only paintball experience comes from college when my fraternity would go out and play once or twice a year. If it was just us, everything was fine. We'd all get the same rental pump-action guns that had all the accuracy of a musket and we'd have a good time.
But about half the time we'd get hardcore paintball guys who sat around discussing the finer points of their CO2 supplies, laser scopes and the cabins they were building in the woods for when their militia would need to fight the government. They generally had their own camouflage and high speed, high accuracy and likely high cost guns.
The last time I went I remember getting hit in the helmet with a shot that sent paint fragments through the little breathing slots and into my mouth. So I stood up and raised my gun to signify that I was out and pulled my mask up so I could spit out the paint. One of these idiots decided that would be a good time to peg me in the cheek with a paintball.
So I did what any rational person would do. I ran over and started beating him with my gun. I was kicked out and spent the rest of the afternoon in the bar.
It's been nine years since I've played paintball and I haven't missed it at all. Now broomball? That I miss. |

The best paintball equipment does you no good if you can't keep something between you and incoming fire. I would also like to re-iterate the use of long sleeves, long pants, and knee pads. Gloves are nice too, since they help ease impacts on knuckles (which F****ng hurt!!)
I used to be pretty hardcore into paintball, but it just got expensive when I was burning through 3 cases of paint by myself in a day, and I used Chronic which ran me about 70 bucks a case. But you would know when you tagged someone, no wiping that stuff away.
But yeah, learn to use cover. Don't just cower and hide the whole match like my sister, but don't get stupid either.
Peace,
Greg
