I'll be watching college football, and then heading out to dinner with my wife. I wish it included seeing those guys live.

That's okay though, last semester I was sitting about 5 feet away from Bass Extremes when they played at our school. Even cooler, they didn't have their usual drummer with them, so I got to see them play with the drummer from the quartet I had running at the time. It was pretty sick.
Tomorrow I'm recuperating from the past week.

Then I get to see my co-worker cry because his precious team lost, then I get to laugh in his face and call him a girl. And finally I get to go home with the actual girl. Mostly.

I'm actually more excited about them playing with the Symphony rather than seeing Vic. I've never seen BFFT before and I like Vic's playing but I'm trying to go as a listener as opposed to a bassist. I appreciate what Vic has done for Bassdom and how academic he is in his approach to playing bass. It is actually a big inspiration for me, but as I said...I'm want to enjoy the entire experience rather than "pine for Vic" (with all due respect).
There is a record out there by Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer called Music for Two that I like a lot more than any BFFT record I've heard (not counting Greatest Hits of the 20th Century and Live Art). Lot's of bowed legato upright bass and classical and bluegrass stuff as opposed to the funkier, fusiony type stiff you usually hear with BFFT. I'm kind of hoping that it will be a lot like that but on a grander scale because of the Symphony. Hopefully there a lot of improv too . Not sure how to pull that off with an orchestra though.
Still excited none the less. |

The Symphony was there for a little ambiance but on some songs they were full tilt. The Flecktones played some familiar tunes, some X-mas songs and a new piece that was arranged for the symphony along with BFFT. That was the best song of the night. Very powerful and dramatic. I felt some chills at moments. A very musical treat. |

Vic & Roy are from around here. Back in their early daze, it seemed like the Flecktones played around here 3-4 times a year...all free events!
How 'bout dem FLYERS!?!

It seems like their records are a bit stuffy and forced, but seeing them live they are much more loose and relaxed |

What are you doing tomorrow? | I missed this until now. I saw BFFT in 2002 or so and they were great (I agree, they're much better live than on record), I'm sure the show was excellent.
But I saw two of my favorite bands right now play together Friday night--the Drive-By Truckers and the Hold Steady--at a small-ish venue (about 2000). Both played basically full sets (they're switching off headlining duties during the tour) and were in great form. Then they played a few songs together at the end--a couple covers and a couple of each band's songs. They were obviously having a blast and enjoying each other's company. A great night of rock'n'roll and one of the best shows I've seen in a long time.

How 'bout dem FLYERS!?! | I knew that the Wootens were from Hampton Roads. I remember him winning Bass Offs at Alpha Music although I never personally witnessed it. There was a time that I was going to see them at Waterside in Norfolk for free; but because of rain we decided to stay indoors. The show with the Symphony was spur of the moment. We were lucky to get seats.
We got a copy of their new X-mas album and they did a meet and greet after the show. We got some autographs. My wife got to feel up Jeff Coffin's crazy goatee. |

| One time, the Flecktones were playing the Jazz fest & it was moved inside Scope because of the rain. I was a little bummed 'cause I had seen them before outside at Waterside & it smoked. The Scope show turned out to be great anyway. Bruce Hornsby sat in for most of their set. I took a friend that had never seen them before...one thing he liked before he even heard a note: They moved their own equipment. Gotta love that! Quote: |

| I picked that up, too. Ridiculous!
