WASHINGTON (AFP) – Under-fire BP chief executive Tony Hayward issued an apology Wednesday for saying in an interview that he would "like my life back," as a massive oil spill wreaks devastation along the Gulf coast.

"I made a hurtful and thoughtless comment on Sunday when I said that 'I wanted my life back,'" Hayward said in a post to BP America's Facebook page.

"When I read that recently, I was appalled. I apologize, especially to the families of the 11 men who lost their lives in this tragic accident," he said.

Eleven rig workers aboard the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon drilling platform were killed when it exploded on April 20, sinking two days later into the Gulf of Mexico. Since then, according to government estimates, at least 20 million gallons have leaked into the waters.

Despite BP's efforts to cap the flow, thick crude continues to ooze into the Gulf of Mexico's fragile wetlands and once-pristine tourist beaches, killing wildlife and their habitats and destroying the local fishing and tourism-based economy.

"Those words don't represent how I feel about this tragedy, and certainly don't represent the hearts of the people of BP -- many of whom live and work in the Gulf -- who are doing everything they can to make things right," Hayward said in the post.

"My first priority is doing all we can to restore the lives of the people of the Gulf region and their families -- to restore their lives, not mine."

In an interview with NBC on Sunday, Hayward had begun to offer an apology to Gulf residents "for the massive disruption it's caused to their lives."

He continued: "There's no one who wants this thing over more than I do, I'd like my life back."

The environmental disaster -- the worst in US history -- has badly damaged BP's reputation, with its shares sliding 2.13 percent Wednesday a day after plunging 13 percent, wiping 17.6 billion dollars off its market value.

And in other news, Armando Galarraga wants his perfect game back.

I don't see it as that much of an insult.

He is human, it was an honest emotional statement.
Imagine being in his shoes right now. You probably can't sleep good at night.

I guess it's easier to paint someone of as "the bad guy" who is responsible for all that is going on than to sympathize with this particular human being.

+1.

We're all human. Instead of blaming, the concentration should be solely on FIXING this thing right now. Since it's still not fixed, it's not time to start pointing fingers.

In related news, the US government met with James Cameron and asked him for ideas, citing his expertise in underwater filming. If we're lucky, maybe he can get better picture quality than the current cameras, add some blue people with tools and at least pretend something's getting done.

Yup, we're all human, but some humans are so utterly tone-deaf that it's stunning. I read a statement like this and I picture the guy pacing around the palazzo on his private island in the Maldives while his foot servants bring him 100-year-old cognac to calm his nerves and help him sleep... and I just feel SOOOO MUCH SYMPATHY....

Joke's on him. He's never getting his old life back now, especially when his company dies because of this. Cummupins for screwing everyone for the last 20+ years IMO. I just feel bad for all the people's lives this has affected, BP's employees included.

No. I think he's developing a a new movie experience specifically for this call Oily-vision. While watching the production, the movie actually starts to smell like crude and then the theater is flooded with it, rendering it useless for the people that come after you.

And only so far as it affects his net worth.

You probably don't sleep more than less than three hours a night, you mean. I doubt he has had more than that every day since the spill.

I heard he's already got Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thortnon, Leonardo Dicaprio and Ben Affleck lined up to take the Custeau Probe down and plug up the well with a Nuclear bomb made out of remnants of wreckage recovered from the Titanic. Bruce is saying goodbye to his daughter Liz Tyler as I post.

I`ll throw in my 2 cents now. I agree with everyone who says this guy doesn`t care at all about anyone or anything except his bottom line. In all the press conferences he has given he has never struck me (even for a second) as someone deeply concerned or troubled about the events that are going on around him. It would not surprise me if to him the 11 men who died were nothing more than a thorn in his side and something he`d just ultimately have to write off on. He also doesn`t seem to understand that it`s not just those 11 men who died who lost their 'lives'. Many people are going to be out of jobs for years because of this and are going to completely lose their livelihood. He just sounds like a selfish, inconsiderate **** to me.

Many of the locals feel they will lose their culture. The areas affected are old fishing communities with families that have been there since the 1800's. If they lose more than a season or so of decent income, other kinds fo work are nearly nonexistant and they'll likely have to move to find work elsewhere.
