Odd Question: How safe are cashiers checks??

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm selling an expensive item on ebay, but the buyer doesn't want to use Paypal for payment. He is offering to send a cashiers check, but I'm somewhat hesitant. He's been a member on ebay for eight years and has perfect feedback(30 positives).

I googled this topic ahead of time, but most of the links mentioned the Nigerian scam.

What reservations should I have in receiving a cashiers checks? What precautions should I take if I decide to sell to him?

Weird question, but I have no idea what to do. Any help is much appreciated.

Don't ship until the check clears, and make it clear you will not ship for about 2 weeks after you receive payment.

I have heard of cashiers checks being BAD even after they have cleared. Ask for a US Postal Money Order. If he can't do that I would be suspicious. IMHO

What if the check is bogus? Am I financially responsible for the false check?

What would you do in my situation?

Send a message via AIM to GeneralElectric
Say a certified bank check or USPS Money Order (not money gram, since I've heard bad things about them. Not that I haven't used them before though)
