Odd Sleep Problem

Anyone have the problem of going to sleep because they just don't like sleeping? I really can't stand sleeping at all and then I'm extremely tired by the time I do go to bed then I end up waking up at a random time. Granted this works now because I'm jobless but when I get a job I'm going to be having to get up at a certain time. The problem is, I'm not one of those people that are up for 16 hours and sleeping for 8. Those people have a regular schedule, in bed and out same time every day. I'm up for 20+ and then sleep anywhere from 5 - 13 hours.

So my question is, anyone else have this problem and does anyone know how I can enjoy going to sleep?

Get rid of caffeine from your diet, except possibly early in the day.

Spend more time exercising.

Try clearing your mind.

I'm rather nocturnal too, at it's 3:53 and I'm wide awake posting. Then again I slept until 1:30 this afternoon. That's after a week of not sleeping due to final exams.

I have a day job and I still have problems going to sleep in time every day, so I end up sleeping in average about 6,5-7 hours per night in the week and possibly a few hours more in the weekend.

Only when I'm at the summerhouse I go to sleep early enough, because there we don't have more than a 12 V solar power system, mainly used to light up the house when it's dark outside. There's no computer, no internet and no tv keeping you up late in the evenings. I'd love to stay there more often than I do because it's very relaxing. You can get up at 7am and feel fully relaxed.

I have that problem on weekends. I work 3rd shift (Sun.-Thurs.) so most weekends I try to live like a "normal" person. It's really messed up my sleep schedule, especially lately, but I just can't sleep. I keep thinking about all the things I want to/have to do and I can't sleep. Just be careful about it though. I had a seizure, mostly due to the medication I was on and a lot of stress, a couple years ago and the neurologist told me that having a sleep schedule like that can cause seizures. Along with high caffeine intake. But definitely try what tplyons said. Do something active during the day (I've been trying that lately) and it could help.

Try establishing a regular regimen of masturbation that coincides with your appropriate bed time. Eventually your subconscious mind will associate it with going to sleep and you will begin to enjoy sleeping.

Regular exercise and get rid of the caffeine. Melatonin is a natural hormone your body generates that tells you to go to sleep. Get a melatonin supplement and take one about 30 before you should go to bed. Get yourself on a regular schedule especially with melatonin your body will get into it.

When you lay down, try counting. Just start with one and see how far you get. I got to 286 once, before I lost count and drifted away into slumberland.

Once you get a job that requires you to wake up early 5 days a week you'll start to get a sleep schedule automatically. After about 3 months you'll be to the point where you go to bed earlier than usual and you'll only sleep in on saturdays and sundays. After 6 months you'll be to the point where you only sleep in an extra couple of hours on the weekends and are up by 9 or 10am, and you'll not want to stay up all night on fridays and saturdays anymore. Your body will assimilate, unfortunately.

All kidding aside, this is not a bad idea. Combine different 'parasympathetic' stimulations. Masturbation, followed by a heavy meal will make just about any guy sleepy. If you are currently using ANY drugs or alcohol, they could be interfering. Alcohol, and many 'downer' drugs (opiates) help put you to sleep - but they do not necessarily promote good rest and sleep cycles. For example, getting drunk will put you right to sleep... but will you wake up refreshed and ready to start your day? Probably not.

As for staying awake during the day: it's difficult. Try naps during the day, and very light stimulants (a little caffeine) but try not to become dependent.

Alcohol actually prevents deep sleep. I have a similar aversion to sleep, though I don't have the odd wakings that others have. I think part of that is worry, since people who've told me about it also told me they worry, and another part is age, since I've only heard about this from post 35 year-olds.

Solving it ... are you going to take any advice on this? I know what to do but I still don't do it. I used to have problems falling asleep once I submitted to going to bed, but I fixed it by cutting out caffeine after 6:30 (I don't remember why this time exactly) and turning off the overhead lights that let me avoid feeling that it was late. And no arguing with the wife, I can't sleep like that.

Man, I have serious sleep problems...

I can never get my mind to slow down for very long, even without caffeine. There are times when I go days only sleeping a couple of hours a night. I used to really stress about it, but then I just accepted it. I started reading books, and doing things. For a year it was like I led two different lives, one during the day, and one after my family went to bed. I got so much more stuff done. Eventually I went to a doctor, gave me a sleep medicine... now I sleep about 5-6 hours a night... and if I don't get into a "sleeping routine" involving my sleep medicine, I drive my wife amazingly nuts... she wakes up and wonders what the heck I'm doing up at 2:00 in the AM just reading away... I read nearly 100 books last year!
Don't stress about it, just relax... if you are tired, sleep, if you're not, don't...

I've got some bad sleep problems. I'm usually up for almost 2 days and then I sleep for about 4-5 hours tops.

I wake up every morning a 7:32 no matter what time I go to bed when I do get to bed and I can't fall asleep afterwards. I know because I look at my digital clock next to my bed. It doesn't have an alarm either.

I exercise daily (mainly running since I quit smoking cigarettes) and I eat reasonably well. Melatonin supplements make me feel ill as well. I also rarely drink alcohol and I rarely drink coffee or have much sugar.

I do find though that sleeping with other people helps me sleep for some reason. I'll sleep as long as they do and I don't wake up at my usual time. However most of the girls I bring home I wouldn't sleep with platonically as I don't know them that well and it'd be weird to ask a girl that is my friend to do that for me.

I guess I'll have to suffer.

it's 3:40 AM.

I almost fell asleep while driving.

But now, wanting to sleep doesn't seem appealing.

Gods knows why.

Sounds like you are night owl. I am one too but I also love sleep. It helps to have a comfortable bed with higher (doesn't have to be the highest) thread count sheets, flannels in the wintertime. You will have to learn to love it or settle on a job that jives with your sleep schedule.

I assume you are a bit like me and want to get the most out of your day/life. Try to get up really early instead and make sure you set the alarm and make it a habit, say you get up round about 5 in the morning. If you create a habit waking up everyday same time, you will soon find out when your "go to bed time" is and that will also lead you to your real need of sleep hours.

I often fall into the bad habit of staying up late, very late, sometimes even early, but in reality this is just stupid coz I get more done and more out of my day if I get up early.
