I'm off to an open mic tonight.
I hope it's decent , it's really a nice loft with a nice stage, lights and house PA. However, you know how weird open mic protocol can get. Last month I did this and there was barely a drummer that could keep time.
Wish me luck

challenging.
There is the guy who covers Beatles who can neither sing nor play.
I had a guy doing 'Who do you love' and some random Bo
Diddley stuff that got PO'ed at me becuase I walked the bass
line with some approach notes on him. Apparently he could
not count to 4, and had to have the bass on the same note
on 1,2,3,and 4 so he could find the one. I guess you always
know where you are when you always play by yourself. Duh.
I had an Eric Clapton clone. Voice and licks. Original. Yeah.
I have had 6+ people say they 'want to get something
together' and never call or email me back.
Had some pretty decent players as well.
Had some great challenges to play with people I don't know,
on songs they arranged (not me) and likely in keys that suited
their voices so I needed to change up on the fly. That has
been very good for my listening and improvisational skills.
It's always fun playing Neil Young 2 half steps up, especially
when the guy starts up and doesn't call the song or the key.
I have also forged some good solid friendships with solid
players.
Keep going. It's all about the networking there, bluewine.
Some players will be intimidated when they hear you. Tell
them you need a break and that they need to share the bass
dutieS for the night. It's not a contest. If there are 2 or 3
bassists, I am inclusive and will be careful to share the
playing time as the host is usually working the guitar
player list as opposed to the support players around for the
night. Some nights you will play all night on bass, and
others you have to share.
All in good fun, glad to hear you are getting out there.

I see lots of guys they blow me away, that is not going to stop me, you never know when your gonna get "hot" | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
