I should have just said, "...that other Russian goalie!) Also, I've heard they might be dangling Jeff Carter as possible trade bait, although I'm not sure what or who they might be looking for.
And Mike, it sure sounds like Sid The Kid will be back for your Pens next season.

| | Well, Ahoy Paloi | | Join Date: Sep 2009 Location: Cape Cod, MA | | | Thanks for the new thread. I do think that Boston's speedy series against Philly was due to poor goal tending and, more importantly, injuries to the Flyers.
As a Flyers fan, what is the outlook for next season? And Mike, what is the status on Sid the Kid? |

My condolences to Vancouver fans. Came up just short.... again. Their day will come. Being a long time Red Wing fan, i've been spoiled by their recent success, but the wait to get there was excruciating(any Wing fan who suffered through the 80's and early 90's can relate). Be patient.

And Mike, it sure sounds like Sid The Kid will be back for your Pens next season. | I think Homer will be able to sign Bryzgalov but they will have cap issues if they do. Currently they only have about $430,000 to work with,...but that will go up when the league decides on a number,...and there is some dead weight they can shed. CapGeek.com :: It's a numbers game :: NHL Salary Cap Charts
As far as I'm concerned. Brian Boucher, Sean O'donnel, Nick Boynton, Nickolai Zherdev, and maybe Daniel Carcillo (which could be likely after his shenanigans during Game 4 of the Semis) can walk. Of course that will leave some holes to fill.
I know that some of the faithful would like to see Carter gone,...but he can be effective when he works hard and stays away from the bars. Remember that he was the Flyers' leading goal scorer during the Regular Season. If I remember correctly he signed an 11 year extension this past November and as far as I know; will have to waive his NTC if a trade is to happen. His cap hit is about 6mil.
Obviously the hole in net will be filled if Bryzgalov can be signed and I think he'd make a great mentor to Bobrosky. The Flyers would have a formidable tandem in goal, although it must be said that Bobs won't benefit from riding the bench.
O'Donnel's age started to show at the end of the Regular Season and into the Playoffs. The Defensive corps of the Flyers is veteran and I don't really know what their prospects are like,...but it's about time to inject some new blood on the blueline either in Erik Gustafsson, Kevin Marshall, or Marc-Andre Bourdon and get a role playing 3rd line Dman. It's times like these I wish we still had Luca Sbisa but we did get old man Pronger for him.
I think the Flyers are deep enough at the front end that loosing Carbomb and Zherdev won't sting too much. Zherdev was too much of a revolving door last year. He has talent,...but if I were him I wouldn't be pursuing a contract with Philly. Scratched too many times. I'd really rather see Carter stay.
I will say that the Flyers will need another enforcer if Shelley get's injured again. I miss Aaron Asham.

I will say that the Flyers will need another enforcer if Shelley get's injured again. I miss Aaron Asham. | Good post, and I agree with virtually everything you've said. I like Carter and would hate to see him go. Zherdev is definitely expendable, but I think his cap hit is only 1 million. O'Donnell is definitely getting old and slow; and I too always liked Asham.
Bipslapper, I think the Flyers will be in good shape if they can get reliable goaltending without losing the solid players they already have. Goaltending has always been their bane since 1975.
I know it happens to everybody, but they've really been snake-bit with injuries the last few seasons. They have a good mix of young and old, but the old ones are getting older all the time. I'd really like to see them go all the way either this coming season or the next. After that, I'm afraid Pronger and Briere will be at or close to the end of the line.

Poile and Weber have both agreed to see what elite D-men are getting from their respective teams and making sure he is in the top 5 of those that resign with their respective teams.
As far as the rest of the D is concerned, I have the sneaking suspicion that Shane O'Brien will be a $1.6 million salary cap reduction. No other D-men's contracts are up, and we've got a fair few prospects that are NHL tryout ready.
Anders Lindback and Rinne are both returning next year, and Rinne will be making another Vezina run.
Winger time! Steve Sullivan, Joel Ward, Nick Spaling, Matt Halischuk, Cal O'Reilly, Sergei Kostitsyn, and Marcel Goc are all on expiring contracts. Steve Sullivan (and his 3.75 million dollar contract) are either gone or will be highly restructured if he returns. I can almost foresee a low salary, high incentive deal if he returns. Goc and Ward will probably both return with a bit of a raise. Kostitsyn has publicly stated that he wants to stay a Predator, and he probably will. Halischuk and Spaling were both critical parts of our special teams units, and I'd like to see Poile resign them both. O'Reilly is the wildcard to me. He played well below expectations, but then again, his expectations were set REALLY high as he was a point a game AHL player. I wonder if Poile lets him walk, and tries to make a splash with a big name signing, or if Poile gives him one last chance to produce at a NHL level.
Personally, I'd like to see us spend some of that ~$20 Million in cap space we've got. Another year like the Arnott-Kariya-Sullivan signings is highly unlikely, but there could be some big name players on the market, and us landing one could go a long way in launching us to the Stanley Cup.

Recchi will retire - he will be missed, but it is unlikely that he will ever pay for a drink in New England for the rest of his life.
Timmy is signed for the next 2 years; Bergeron for 3 and Chara for 4 years.
Ryder and Kaberle are unrestricted free agents who didn't do enough to justify the salaries they were making (Ryder-4M; Kaberle-4.25M) - Both might be back if they are willing to take a substantial cut. Jordan Caron is the top forward prospect who saw some time this year with the big club - he has some game - not as slick as Seguin but a better 2-way player at this point in their careers. The D alternatives (Kampfer and Bartkowski) are less well-known to me.
Marchand should see a substantial raise - (3.25-3.75M) perhaps. The B's have to sign that guy.
Savard has a cap hit of 4M/yr for the next 6 years. It would be great if he were able to return but I wouldn't be surprised if he retires - his history of concussions is very serious.

I'd make Marchand the coach, gm & president & make him the mayor of Boston.
Savard's done, whether he officially retires or not.

Savard's done, whether he officially retires or not. | No argument here except Mayor Menino is popular and powerful. He took some grief over his refusal to allow the B's to open the Garden for Game 7 and for the heavy police presence downtown. In 20/20 hindsight he made the right call.
After his career is over, I'd be fine with a Mayor Marchand. Former NBA star Dave Bing has taken on the daunting task of Mayor of Detroit.

Marchand for governor, then.
