When I was an undergrad at Syracuse in the graphic design department the university paid an outside source $18k to develop a new logo. Instead of offering a small prize package to a student in their own NATIONALLY RANKED DESIGN SCHOOL, they spent a fortune and came up with this: 
It lasted all of about 3 years.
