And here's why.
That's right: Rowan Atkinson will be the Star in a reasonably priced car. Atkinson must be a bigger petrol head than Clarkson, I'm pretty sure that interview will be a hoot.

Here see for yourself.

I went to yesterday's taping (or disking?) of Top Gear US. The "celebrities" in the Big Star, Small Car section that day were Rick and Chumlee from the show "Pawnstars," followed by comedian Bill Engvoll. I'd somewhat heard of Bill Engvoll, at least, but not of "Pawnstars." We got to preview some bits of the challenges. |

What part of Top Gear UK isn't suitable for the American audience? |

Love em both.

I never got the impression any of them had a clue what they were talking about. Simple things that any gear head would say, they spew unconvincingly. I think I was forever turned off when one of them utter the term 'Nos'.... said it .. I'm old school, and stuck in my ways, and that single Fast and Furious spawned term grates me the wrong way. It's EN Oh Es ... or Nitrous. Not NAWS... jackwagons.
I recognize it's a "me" thing. I wouldn't want someone to remake M.A.S.H. either. Top Gear works because it is the entire sum of it's parts. Clarkson + Hammond + May + Brit humor = perfection. The fact that they are are recognizably, unabashedly "petrol heads" gives the show the credibility to push beyond the shtick. I, personally, just don't get that with the American version. And trust me, I really REALLY wanted to like it. |

The funny thing is their "truck of shame" was a Toyota Hillux which:
a) made it to the end of the challenge without any problems
b) I would have gladly chosen over any of the 3 US vehicles
Wasn't sure why it was chosen as the truck of shame, after all, a similar truck on the UK series survived: being tossed in the Atlantic, wrecking ball, fire, caravan droped on it, dropped from top of demolished high-rise...and still started and drove.
Later

I'll admit that I'm not the biggest gearhead around myself, but even I wasn't convinced that those guys really even knew what they were talking about. |

The US version = NO. I was hoping it would be good, but it's abysmal. None of the hosts make me ever want to see anything else they do, ever. I grew up in the racing world in CT, MA, NY, and I don't think any of those guys would be competent to even pump their own gas.

Wow. Didn't know he was such a racer. Honestly I generally just purchase the DVDs after each season (er...series, sorry british folks) instead of catching it on BBC America since that's the only way U.S. audiences can catch the whole show.
