OK, your choice

Sign in to disble this ad
Lets say you are not allowed to play bass guitar or double bass any longer. No cheating allowed.
THREE QUESTIONS:
1. What instrument would you choose to learn to play?
2. Could you generate the enthusiasm for the new instrument that you had for bass?
3. Would you forever deeply mourn losing bass-playing?

My answers:
1. Cello
2. I think so (sorry, bass...dammit, now I feel guilty)
3. Yes

I've always found it easy to play brass instruments...I could switch to trumpet and enjoy it.

1. Piano

2. Yeah I just need to learn the chords properly and I reckon I could muddle through it to a certain degree. Biggest hurdle is taking the initial plunge and buying a new instrument. That and finding something simple to begin with that keeps your interest.

3. I practically gave up 10+ years of playing guitar to play bass, so I guess I could do it again. Well I say "gave up", it just got sidelined as I started playing bass more in bands. Lets face it, the world already has too many guitarists.

I do play some guitar, trumpet, french horn, baritone and piano, so I'm not sure they would count.

If it had to be a new instrument, cello. If it could be one of the above, guitar. There's just something about playing a stringed instrument that you don't get with other instruments, feel wise. And yes I would miss playing bass. Big time.

Steel, pedal or lap.
Yep, been thinking of getting one for quite a while anyway.
Yeah, always thought it just fit me.

I've already got Grade 7 on cello.
But I'd probably go with G*****. I'm sorry.

Maybe if I found an amp I really liked and started to go after the 'ideal tone'

Yes.

+1 I would go back to playing the bass trombone but I would not be as enthused with it as bass but since the music is about the same I would not miss it much

1. Pedal steel guitar. That or piano.
2. Sure.
3. I wouldn't miss the bass if I were any good on either of those.

Plenty of other options out there, Guitar would be the first choice, but i'd like to try something more unusual. I think i'd just concentrate on keys a lot more, but i'd love to get a cello. Or a harp. Or some sort of versatile wind/brass. Or..

I'd miss bass though

I'd pursue my tenor banjo with more dedication. Either that, or the cello.

Yes.

And double yes.

1. Piano definitely, as bassteban mentioned the synth/programming options would be a huge plus, but yes I've always wished I had put some time into piano.

2. Not really, couldn't really put that kind of time in now.

3. Yes, I would miss it for a while I guess.
