Old School metal

Sign in to disble this ad
Looking for some older metal bands. Feel like diving into the history of what I listen to, see where it all came from, and since I'm a youngin, I don't know anybody except for Black Sabbath, Metallica, Iron Maiden (The popular guys)... and if you would be so kind as to include your favorite song from them that would be awesome.

Thanks

How old are we talking? Led Zeppelin can be classed as old metal. Motley Crue, Skid Row, (Old) Guns N Roses, Van Halen, Slayer, Motorhead, Kiss etc. Try looking at some Wikipedia articles on the genre. they tend to have multiple examples.

Iron Maiden and Dio. They're pretty much all you need when talking about metal.

To me THEY are the godfathers of the genre. These guys took metal to a completely different level that Sabbath, Rainbow, Deep Purple, and many other artists only wish they could of accomplished.

Start with the masters: Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Dio, Ozzy (first two solo albums, try to get the ones not remastered with rerecorded bass/drums off ebay), Motorhead, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Van Halen and KISS. Of course, throw in some Rush and Zep. One band not mentioned is King's X. They are a little later than the above, but an amazing band. I'd throw in some Queensryche too (Operation Mindcrime = amazing bass tone).

If you want something a little off the beaten path, at least as far as popularity goes, check out Voivod. Great, underrated, Canadian progressive/thrash metal band.

Dang, the good ones have been taken. However, if you like proto-metal, try some Steppenwolf. They greatly helped the beginning of metal.

Might I suggest Helloween. Early albums off course. Keeper of the Seven Keys album 1 and 2.

Markus Grosskopf (from Helloween), definately my favourite metal bassist. An old school master like Steve Harris.

If we're getting into proto-metal, check out Blue Cheer.
