An Oldie but a Goodie

So I've been car shopping on a pretty limited budget for the past two months. I set my options a little to limited as well opting only for an AWD Subaru Loyale wagon. It's the smaller wagon that was succeeded by the Impreza in 1995. Well in my area the winters can be harsh and hard on a car and Soobs handle it well. They are rugged and the AWD make them a little more agile in snowy conditions.

Of course no amount of FWD, AWD, or 4WD will save you bacon during panic braking,...I'm well aware of giving myself more time and space in snowy conditions (the other idiots on the road are a little more worrisome). When starting out it is all about traction and that's where the AWD/4x4 comes in handy, but I digress. The point is this is the sellers season for Soobs and if people don't hang on to them for winter transportation,...they are selling them for top dollar,...someone will pay it.

After about two months of searching hi and low for the right Soobie (I'm partial to the Gen 2 and Gen 3s), locally and also in Portland, Seattle and as far away as Henderson, NV and Des Moines, IA; thinking it would be a good idea to ship a car sight unseen I finally settled on a local car. Guess what,...it ain't no Subaru.

I test drove the car extensively and you can tell that it has been adult owned and responsibly cared for over it's 170k miles of service. It purrs like a kitten and the 5 speed shifts smoothly. It's a wagon so it will haul gear and bread just fine. The guy is selling it with a set of studded snow tires. The interior is immaculate and exterior has it's share of dings that I'd expect on a 14 year old car.

The AC blows cold and the Heater is hot without that sweet anti-freeze smell,...which is a good sign that the heater core is functioning and not leaking (a $700 fix if the dash needs to be yanked).

It's a screaming deal, similar sedans and coupes are going for almost twice as much.

Maybe next spring I can find a cool old Subaru on the cheap and turn it into a project car but for now I'll be driving this great winter worthy car. It will be a good hand me down when my (27 year old) wife finally decides to learn how to drive and get her license. I pick her up next Thursday...

Between picking up a great deal on a Japanese Squier Jazz bass and finally finding a killer buy on a great car,...today was a good day.

Justys are goofy but I'd totally drive one,...I think they have some whacky belt drive transmission,...but don't quote me on that.

Of course someone on the west side had to go and post this beaut after I already made a decision locally. The tires are a bit wide for snow,...but that is a sweet ride.

Yeah that gets an eyebrow from me too,...I'm just glad she's ready to take that step but there are a lot of reasons she's never had a license. Some are personal and I won't divulge them publicly, but some of the benign reasons are,...the town we live in is pretty compact and has a reliable mass transit system and she has always had jobs that were within twenty blocks of home,...even her current very good job is close to home. That still limits you IMO, but in Spokane; if you play your cards right, you don't need a car.

She has also had a fear and mistrust of her own decision making skills and to me,...if you are afraid to drive your better off leaving it to someone else,...scared drivers are often times the ones that cause accidents and hurt themselves as well as others. She wants to overcome that fear. I think she will be good at burying her fear and not freak out in the car,...but I know it will be there. I just try to pass on my experience with driving and think that it has made her a little more comfortable learning how to drive.

She is ready to be an adult and I'm happy about that. She has a great job with benefits and quit some things that were sort of kid oriented. She is a very level headed and mature person and when it comes to our friendship and relationship it's very fulfilling. I couldn't ask for a more understanding and wonderful person to be my wife.

About the only thing she depends on me for is to be the driver and it's nice to be depended on. I'm such a control freak behind the wheel I'll be doing all the driving anyway even when she gets her license. It will be fun to teach her to drive a manual though. I taught my last GF how to operate a clutch and that chick is forever grateful.

She's 27. She's been kicking around the idea of getting her license for a while. She could be blowing glass except the only drug free shop where she can work and make art instead of pieces is about 15 miles away. So she realizes that she needs a car. We finally have one that I'm comfortable with her driving and not leaving her stranded. After the thaw,...I'll get my Soobie and she'll get the Honda.

Just for reference I attached a pick of the jalopy I've been driving ever since I went back to work which was two months ago,...we've been squirreling away for that long to buy a good car when one came available. I'm sorry but I'm not going into debt over a car.

In my case I also worked about 20 blocks from where I live. I've always had my license but have not owned a car in four years. I just didn't want the hassle or responsibility. There were always cars at my disposal. I picked up a POS car for $300 to get by while I saved because I got a killer new job that is a 15 minute commute away. I also have to deliver the bread for my work. The accounts are within a one mile radius of where I live so it's convenient for the owners not to have to drive all the way to town and back to the bakery,...when I can make the delivery on the way home. The wagon will make a much better bread delivery vehicle. I get paid mileage for using my personal vehicle for work,...in case you are wondering.

I'm sorry but I'm not going into debt over a car. It was a nice little exercise in financial management and also nice to prove to my wife that there is a good reason to save money,...not just spend it all because,...meh,...we will make more.
