Olympians and McDs?

Sign in to disble this ad
Do they really eat at Mcdonalds as these commercial claims? I had a debate with a coworker today and she said there's no way they would eat junk food, but to me it seems possible. One they can't eat healthy all the time right and during training these athletes burn a lot of calories. There's only so many fruits and vegetables one can eat before you full way too full so wouldn't calorie dense foods make a bit of sense combined with other nutritional plans. I would imagine they're burning more calories in a day then we do in five.

I know a guy that's a very serious athlete. He trains every day, VERY hard and is built like a brick **** house. When he goes to McD's, he buys about 6 quarter pounders, takes the meat and cheese out and tosses the bread. Then he crumbles the meat, cheese, pickles and onions up over 2-3 salads. He also drinks 3-4 shakes and about half dozen of the apple slice things. Basicallly, no fries, no bread and LOTS of everything else. He does pretty much the same thing where ever we eat.

I agree with this, but at the same time, I don't doubt that they might stop for a burger once in a while--hardcore athletes can still eat junk, so long as they don't make it a huge part of their diet

i'd believe them so long as they aren't saying they eat there every day

Right. Once in a while is not going to be a problem. To believe that these Olympic athletes eat McD's every day based on a commercial, is simply ridiculous. Also, there's more ways to eat "healthy" than just fruits and vegetables, and there's a LOT of ways to get protien and carbs besides McD's.

Another concept for the OP to get familiar with...

Paid endorser.

These guys have a very small window to get paid for advertising. Follow the money. It doesn't matter if they eat there or not. What matters is whether or not an individual would eat that crap because an athlete does a commercial.

I'm sure they have some McDs from time to time if it's free and available. It won't kill them.

It's no different for them than anyone else. A Big Mac once in a while is no big deal. A Big Mac every day - maybe not a great idea. Moderation. A term that many people have a tough time with - and not just where food is concerned.

Like my friend, Michael Phelps eats huge amounts off food because he burns so many callories each day. I wouldn't call it a high junk food diet. Mostly tons of protein and good carbs.

Heh, Michael Phelps. But he only did so because of the massive amount of calories he burned every day. It's not like that's his normal diet.

also, for someone to honestly claim that they "eat mcdonalds food" really only requires a "here sign this contract, eat this salad, and then read these lines to the camera." besides, who gives a crap? I mean really:

A) it's a commercial for McDonalds
B) they're olympic athletes

if someone is allowing either of those two things to hold any sway whatsoever over how they choose to live their life then IMO they're sort of getting what they deserve.

Oh, I'm not questioning the number of calories he burned. Just that it's part of his diet. A friend of mine was into competative bodybuilding and ate in excess of 9,000 calories a day

Agreed. Most people that are dedicated enough to workout and train hard, DON'T fill up on wasted callories when they eat. Things like bread, donuts, candy and fried stuff like chips and fries are usually frowned upon. Protein like a pound and half of McD's burgers over salad might sound bad but it all burns up, including the high fat content. The beef that McD's uses is actually high quality. Get rid of the greasy bun and it's not as bad as one might think if you're active enough to burn it. Also, the amount of expensive, quality meal replacement bars they eat is staggering.

Certainly not as an every day meal, but the occasional McD's burger isn't going to do any damage to an otherwise healthy rocket-fuel program. Depending on the sport, I suspect that some can get away with a few more Big Macs than others (reference CapnSev's earlier post).
