I read that if you wanted to build muscle and lose fat you should consume 1.6 grams of protein for every pound you weigh. That's harder than it sounds! I began to do that, using protein shakes in addition to protein rich meals. I also started lifting weights 3x a week and riding a bike for half an hour every day.
The increased muscle mass raises your metabolism. The protein makes it easier to increase muscle mass.
Don't know much else about the science, but I went from a 36 waist to a 30 waist in 7 months. Seriously. |

No red meat.
Chicken or Turkey 3 times a week. Seafood
or vegetarian the balance of the time.
Lots of fruit and veggies. Both raw and stewed.
No chips. Hearty Wasa bread instead, lots of fiber.
Walk or bike ride 2-3 times a week.
No beer, wine ok.
No soda. Water only. Occasional fruit juice.
No fast foods. Bring your lunch if you work outside your home
so you know exactly what you are eating. No big Macs, no
fries.
Cholesterol went from 205 to 146. I need to lose more
but I was getting the shakes so I thought I would let
myself stabilize a bit. Also, I found that the gout issues
I was having, and joint pain issues have pretty much
disappeared. Lots of good reasons to take off a few lbs.
Once you get in the habit of eating a little better, it isn't
hard to keep up doing it.
Yeah, the clothes fit better too.

COUNT CALORIES!
It really is that simple. It doesn't matter if you're eating carbs, protein, or fats, if you eat fewer calories than you burn you WILL loose weight. If you eat more than you burn, you will gain weight.
A pound of fat equals about 3500 calories. If you can trim your diet down to 500 calories less than you burn that day you'll loose about a pound per week. There are many website out there that can help you calculate your base caloric need. Start with that number and make adjustments when necessary.
Now don't confuse calorie counting with proper nutrition. You still want to cut out saturated fats and salt for your heart health, watch simple sugars so you don't get diabetes, and you need to get all your vitamins.
Also note that you’ll need to add some strenuous exercise to you plan so that your body doesn’t decide to use your muscles for energy instead of fat. If you just sit around and starve yourself this is what will happen. You will lose muscle, which lowers your base caloric need, which requires you to then cut calories even more. By stimulating your muscles a few times a week you can prevent this from happening.
Don't be fooled by fad diets, just count your calories, exercise, and be healthy. |

How you ask?!
Simple I just cut out the unecessary baggage by getting divorced. There went 140lbs just like that. Eating better & jogging got rid of those extra 20lbs in about 4 months or so.

Eat less, move more. (I've been swimming, and weight is FALLING off me...)
Pick up a copy of "Eat this, not that". Small choices can pay big dividends.

I am doing that right now and I have been feeling great. Also, get swine flu, you wont eat for a few weeks so you will loose lots of weight. The last one is a joke.

Human biology works against us in this way, as it is VERY easy to gain weight; despite the stereotype of Americans grossly overeating, most people only eat about 10 extra calories a day. But that adds up to a pound a year, and from your teens to your thirties, that's about 20 pounds. Of course it takes a lot more calories to be 50+ pounds overweight, but most of us are just a little overweight.
The downside is that you need to restrict at least a few hundred calories a day in order to lose weight - simply going down by 10 or 50 calories will likely just result in your body readjusting, or maybe a ridiculously slow loss of a pound a year. Still, for anyone who absolutely cannot handle dieting, it isn't a bad idea to try a diet that is a little easier. But for most folks, you need to pretty seriously cut into your daily intake to lose any significant amount of weight. |

Find physical activities you enjoy that work your muscles and increase your heart rate (but work up to it - don't try and do too much at once if you haven't excerised in a while). Running/jogging is good - I find nothing else burns calories like it - but be mindful of muscle and joint strain. Cut out or cut way down on simple sugars like pop, candy, chocolate, fast food, muffins, bagels, bread, pasta, potatoes, rice and starch in general. Eat fish, chicken and other lean meats, or go for vegetarian options. Make up for the lack of starch with extra veggies. Also be careful of dairy - very fatty. I gained 20 lbs last winter, although I carry it well, thank goodness. Still, it needed to be dealt with, for vanity's sake if nothing else! These things have worked for me. Do some experimenting and you'll find what works for you in time. And do let us know how it goes. You know what they say, it's easy to put on weight, but taking it off again is a whole other ballgame. |

Show me citations of that. In a country where there are 3,000 calorie appetizers on the menus of major restaurant chains, and sodas come in Large, Giant and Glutton sizes, this is impossible for me to believe.
In fact, a quick (very quick) search shows the average eating 2775 calories per day - which is 40% over the recommended amount. Add to that the we're FAR more sedentary than we used to be, and the concept that Americans grossly overeat is exactly right. Quote:

| If you cut into your daily intake without an increase in activity, your body reacts by slowing down your metabolism. Increasing physical output speeds it up.

I did 10 weeks of it religiously and dropped just over 30 pounds. I've been off the food and kept the weight off for more than a year now. In a nutshell, it's just eating smaller meals more often and some common sense. Avoid bad foods. No funnel cakes after beer and nachos. I am not affiliated in anyway with Nutri Systems or any subsiduary thereof, it just worked for me.

I did the cut sugar diet and lost about 10 lbs. Would be more if I wasn't so darn lazy and would get off my butt and do some exercise.
Anything I used to put sugar in I substituted Splenda.
