One-piece bathroom countertop/sink: pros/cons?

Sign in to disble this ad
I need to build a vanity for my folks- I work part-time in a nice cabinet shop & have built cabinets before, so that's a slam-dunk. My question is does anyone here have experience w/one-piece sink/tops & what are the good & bad points to consider?

Granite is nice, but expensive. Some beautiful grains out there, but you will need it precision cut with specialist tools. Can be a bugger to repair if you drop anything on it and chip it though, especially with darker surfaces.

I am currently waiting to move into a new build house and we are at the point of picking work tops from the spec. Having had my heart set on a nice piece of granite, I am now however considering the virtues of Corian...

Good luck. Post some pics of the finished job

The single piece solution is nice for it's simplicity, and when done right, looks very nice. The one piece units at the big box stores look cheap to me.

I've always done separates to have future remodel felxibility and then you have more options to tie in color schemes.

My employer does some pretty killer tops- we've done stores in Downtown Disney. I will post pics- thinking I'll go one-piece(that's what my mom wants, I just wanted to hear some experienced voices on it).

Concrete is the way to go. If you are handy, you can do it yourself and you can make it any colour you want.

Vanity granite is actually pretty cheap. I got my piece for $200 and had it fabricated for $75. They were happy to use one of the laying around slab cuts that wasn't big enough for a kitchen. Mine is a double sink, about 61" long.

Corian burns, that's it's downside, thus if nobody is using a flat iron, curling iron or candle, not an issue.

Concrete is great, but heavy, so you need to know how to build the cabs to handle the weight. Also, the finishing is the expensive part.

All of the stone countertops are much heavier than the old style formica. When you use Corian or silestone, the seam between the sink and the countertop is smooth. All the granite ones I have seen have a crack/joint where the undercounter sink is fastened to the granite. This of course means one extra place that can be more difficult to clean, but there are advantages to granite as well. We used Corian and Silestone.
