Only in America... the ultimate diet

Sign in to disble this ad
http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/08...sor/index.html

Quote:
For 10 weeks, Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, ate one of these sugary cakelets every three hours, instead of meals. To add variety in his steady stream of Hostess and Little Debbie snacks, Haub munched on Doritos chips, sugary cereals and Oreos, too.

His premise: That in weight loss, pure calorie counting is what matters most -- not the nutritional value of the food.

The premise held up: On his "convenience store diet," he shed 27 pounds in two months.
I finally found the diet for me

I bet his health is worse now than it was when he started. Sure he list weight, but his cholesterol is probably through the roof, his blood pressure is probably spiking and he has nicely set himself up for diabetes. On the plus side, he has smaller pants. Weight is not always a good representation of health.

read the article:

Quote:
Blatner, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, said she's not surprised to hear Haub's health markers improved even when he loaded up on processed snack cakes.

Being overweight is the central problem that leads to complications like high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol, she said.

"When you lose weight, regardless of how you're doing it -- even if it's with packaged foods, generally you will see these markers improve when weight loss has improved,"
she said.

I'm going to try this with my leftover Halloween candy. I've got enough to last at least a couple weeks. My wife will probably be pissed, but my dentist will be very happy to see me for the next year.

Exercise is cheaper and it's full of endorphins for teh enjoyment.

- Well I spoke too fast. He does exercise, takes a multivitamin each day and eats some veggies. At some point, yes, less calories seem to make you lose weight.

He's doing it right. Borderline I guess, but right.

Dude, think of the marketing you can do off of this. You could turn this guy into the next Jared the Subway guy. Perfect marketing point.

Basically. If you can make the claim that your product makes the user loose weight, you are golden. Heck, if car companies could claim that, they would.

I could do it too.

Snickers for breakfast
Milky Way for lunch (Skittles for dessert)
M&M's for dinner...

My teeth hurt thinking about it

You see, someone needs to start producing that car from the Flintstones, then they could get away with it.

His bad cholesterol went down and his good went up, considerably. Interesting isn't it?
The basic problem today is overeating and inactivity.
Certain foods are better than others because of antioxidants (good) and weird chemical additives (bad), etc but the BASIC problem is overeating. Overeating throws everthing out of whack and causes you to age faster.
A lot of "junk" food isn't terribly bad if eaten in moderation. Look at photos from the 50's and 60's and 70's, those people had all the "junk" food but there weren't nearly as many fat slobs then because they didn't pig out on huge portions and so often.

There would be certain health implications (which were mentioned in the article) which are essentially unquantifiable, or at least not easy to measure.

While all the artificial additives and preservatives are not pushing his cholesterol up, chances are they are not great for him either, considering many of them are believed to increase risk of cancer, asthma, allergies, and even mental illnesses in some cases. Though I wouldn't be surprised if excessive salt consumption pushed his blood pressure up a bit. Also watch out for the next dental bill
