The only people who should be worried about viruses and malware are people who don't know how to use the internet. |

Straight into the trash it went, then emptied the trash. It is the first time something like that has happened, though I did just do a reinstall lately and the computer is running much better. So more than likely I had at least a couple of other Malware in my computer. |

Hence, don't say it's malware, and don't start asking "Did you *really* authorize a program you don't even know!?"

Every other PC seller (Dell, HP, etc.) and even Microsoft will help confirm whether or not you have malware/virus and give you ideas on how to fix it yourself, or will fix it for you for a nominal fee. Apple plugging it's ears and saying "LA LA LA LA we don't know, you may or may not have malware and in either case I won't help you. Goodbye." Is terrible. Typical of Apple, though. All this does is give them the ability to deny malware on Macs - "I have never seen any malware on a Mac." - of course you haven't. |

OTOH, it's sort of common knowledge that if you get a virus on your Windows PC, Dell or HP has nothing to do with it. I'm pretty sure Apple will get sued by morons claiming it's the company's fault if there's a virus (made by a third-party, authorized by an ignorant user) that infected an Apple computer.
FWIW, I'm expecting another company to step on Apple's toes pretty soon (five-ish years?).

Anyone want to give me the name of the app that tries to install? Or the message that appears. I'm a little worried about my wife on my home computer. I can totally see her installing it accidentally. |

"Mac Defender"???? It's gotta be good, it's for a Mac!
APPROVE!
AW CRAP!

The page disappeared almost as quickly as it appeared, then it started downloading itself. Once the download finished, about 5-10 seconds, I got a window which asked me if I wanted to install Mac Defender. I immediately closed that window, didn't click anything on the window, then found the file in the download folder and deleted it, then emptied trash folder.
I have run into rigged install windows on a couple of windows malware, that if you click install or cancel, will still install it. But not if you close the window without clicking either. |
