Opinions on what to do with this?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just went out to go to the shop, and every doorstep on the upper two floors of my building has a note scribbled "RACIST A******S".

For a start, it's pretty offensive, but obviously something must have kicked off at some point!

Last thing anyone needs is this agro going about. Our main door is on a main road and often left open (as much as many try to keep it closed). So it isn't outwith the realm of belief that it could have been someone from outwith the building.

Anyone have any ideas on what is best to do? Or just let it pass at this point?

No idea, but that is the first time I have ever heard/seen the word outwith used. I guess it is a Scottish thing?

If it happens again, notify the police. It's the first time. Let this one slip.

People don't call people A-holes in the US?

I don't know, I'd try and get a little more of the picture first if possible. See what can you pick up about the cause of that situation. Try and emphasize to the residents that the main door has to be secured after use would be good.

A few of us try that every now and again. Nobody seems to care that it isn't just a security door for their property, but also for everyone elses!

I reported the notes, I was considering letting it slip, but I'm off to visit my folks tomorrow, so I'd rather they be something reported in case anything happens while I'm away.

Shop - Store
A-Holes - Less than pleasant persons
Building - Apartment block
Kicked off - An activity was initiated, generally negative context
Argo - Tension and aggravation
Outwith - From outside the situation

Hope that helps

I skipped over it, misread your post DerHoggz, didn't realise outwith wasn't used much outside of Scotland

Random Idea English: Q & A * Is 'outwith' a word?

First thing to do is to get that crap off the building. Organize your neighbors and get as many involved as possible. The longer that stuff stays up, the more encouraged the graffiti artist will be.

Sorry, but note, I meant that.

It's a sheet of paper with it written on, lying on the floor.

Which is why I wasn't sure what to do, because, well, it's nothing really . Just want this nipped in the bud if/before anything else happens.

Yep yep, it would be best to report it especially if you are not going to be around. Hopefully it will be resolved with the particular person/s involved, encourage more residents to pay attention to the main door, hopefully.

@ Mohawk, What can you tell us about the neighborhood you live in(demographically speaking)? Are there any groups who might feel less than represented(perhaps read:repressed) in your area?

BTW hopefully it is nothing, but be safe in the meantime

Middle of the road Edinburgh, pretty multicultural. Heavy student population too, so even more than most areas. Heck, the only repressed thing locally is the local football (soccer) team, who haven't been getting paid for the past few months (unsurprisingly, not many people are sympathetic!).

My building (8 flats) has folk from all over the UK & Ireland, the US, Indian and China. Traditionally fairly liberal about these parts. It's more bewilderment than anything really.

I'm visiting family from tomorrow, so, more worried about my flat/possessions!

So every apartment door had a note on it saying the same thing and every one that got a note for the most part is of a different race/nationality?

Well then, perhaps you should just be less racist toward your downstairs neighbors!

Ok, to be serious, you did take the step to report this to the police, which is good. Maybe see if another neighbor or 2 will do the same, it might keep some eyes on your building in case they people involved in the first incident come back. I'd guess it is some angry young uns' who were denied a lease or something along those lines.

Maybe also see if friends can hold some of your more expensive gear while you are away?

Pretty much! Has to be some irony to that?

My downstairs neighbors are 18/19 year old irish ladies. I would do pretty much anything for them

If it was something like that, it wouldn't make sense to be plastering the note about, as all of the flats are owned by different people? *shrug*

As said, certainly a sense of bewilderment atm.

Just going to take anything pricey back with me

Was the A******S spelled with two s's or with a rs?

If it had two S's it was the Americans, if it had RS it was the irish ladies!

Actually, it was "SSS"

If it was the Irish ladies, they might just be in for a spanking . . . *ahem* . . .

Does the door shut on its own or do you have to physically shut it?
USUALLY an easy fix .
I know you Scots are handy , having pretty much invented EVERYTHING.
Err on the side of caution , upgrade your deadbolt when you can if you have a lot of expensive kit.

It should shut on its own, but the mechanism needs tightened a bit. Haha, wouldn't want to brag, but, you know . . .

Have a Yale and two large deadbolts. Seems to be the standard in the area. Good to know the place is that safe
