So my son and I have started to watch the original Battlestar Galactica. I've been watching Caprica and have become pretty interested in this story. I've only watched a few odd episodes of the new Battlestar Galactica, but how do they explain the Cylons? The original deals with an ambush by the Cylons, and an attack on Caprica and then a kind of hodgepodge fleet of humans set sail for Earth. Is this how the new Battlestar Galactica starts? Is there any hint that the Cylons are embodiments of avatars in the original, like they're kind of hinting in Caprica? |

In the original, there wasn't any real forestory about the cylons, just a quick betrayal by Baltar, the nefarious chrome cylons (not of human origin, but indeed causing the death of their master race), and then the Humans flee off into space as a survival race to Earth...
In the newer series, you have them decomissioning the warship Galactica, only to resurrect it after a multi-planet "cleansing" by the human-looking cylons against their Human creators......the chrome cylons in this series being an update of the originals (yet oddly, they show an original cylon at one point in the new series)
"Caprica" is trying to bridge the gap or to combine the two, of sorts, imo. Well, not entirely as they dissavow alot of the original's plot points, so scratch that...they are just providing a more plausible back story to the origin of the cylons....think I-Robot in a way. I have not watched a whole lot of Caprica, so I don't know the plot points, but what I've seen has been pretty good, and the ideas were excellent.

| | | The original Series-
The Cylons were originally a "lizard"-type of being...IIRC, they deemed the humanoid form as superior & so they constructed beings (robot-Cylons) in that mold.
The reimagined Series-
Cylons were made by man...were used as slaves...eventually, they became aware (ala The Matrix, The Terminator, you name it) & saw themselves as the superior being. War commenced...and then a treaty. During this "peace", the humans always sent an emissary to some summit. The Cylons never showed...until the day when Tricia Helfer's character shows up with a couple of Centurions. At this point, the Cylons can look like humans, they can even be "sleeper agents" (a Cylon that doesn't even know they're a Cylon until...).
Like the original series, there is a surprise attack by the Cylons, the human race is pretty much kaput (approx. only 40k survived) & in both Series, Baltar is the sellout (in the Original, he made the deal...in the new Series, he was banging a Cylon agent & coughed up all the codes required to destroy the defense structure.
Cool thing about how the Galatica survived in the new series-
It was a museum piece...an old, outdated Ship that was NOT networked into the Defense mainframe. Because it was a STANDALONE Ship, its systems were not infected by whatever the Cylons sent downstream.
We argue about this &$& every other day with out IT people.

I was really sad because the SciFi BSG was AMAZING. Well, until the 4th season, then it all went to crap and ceased making any kind of sense. But up till then it was AMAZING!

| | OVNIFX EXAR pedals rep for North & Central America | | Join Date: Oct 2005 Location: PDX, OR | | I watched all the original BSG episodes when I was young. My understanding at that time was just that the bad alien Emperor dude on the tall throne had assembled an army of robots to wipe out humanity just as an expansion of his empire. There was little discussion of why the robots were more human-shaped than the Emperor dude, or why his sidekick had a glitter-filled lava lamp for a head.
Of course this is from my memories as a child 30 years ago, so I may have completely missed or forgotten something that would seem obvious upon watching it now.
To the extent that my memory is correct, it basically indicates that the writers of the new BSG had to invent a whole lot of back-story that had almost no presence in the original. |

I've never read the books... I have always preferred reading science over science fiction, but enjoy the visual aspect of watching scifi stuff. |

Hey Maki, in the new BSG, Lieutenant Starbuck got a sex-change and turned out to be a hard-drinking hot blonde. Lots of other eye candy in the new BSG as well.
My kinda woman.

I agree with James. Some of the best tv in recent years, no matter the genre.

I'm also one of those people who gew up watching the original back in the day, and from what I remember, there isn't much linking the old and the new. Except for the Battlestar and the Vipers that is.
There is some embarassing (to me anyway) attempts to link the old with the new, but that fails miserably. Both are exellent shows though, just finished the newer one box-set a few days ago. Quote:

I had high hopes for that series, and even though the snail-pace start, I think it kinda grew on me.

"They fought a thousand-year war with the Cylons, warrior robots created by a reptilian race which expired long ago, presumably destroyed by their own creations".
I recall one specific time this was told to Boxey (the young boy).
Also, I thought the original lasted longer than 1 season...24 total episodes? That's it?

BSG new series is still my #1 fav.
