What the heck - watching Idol so I thought I'd start a poll. Didn't get that invitation from the Academy? Let's vote anyway! Which will win the 2010 Oscar for "Best Motion Picture??

The Basterds have taken the lead!

Up was also fantastic, and i think "The Road" may have been the best movie of the year, but didn't get much attention.

Firstly, you can distinguish which movies are actually going to be given consideration by looking at the ones that also have the director getting an Oscar nod.

Secondly, the new voting system makes the guessing a lot harder. It used to be "pick the best of the list," now its "label them all one-through-ten."

Odds are either on Avatar or The Hurt Locker, with The Basterds being a dark-horse.
My prediction? Avatar wins best picture, but Cameron won't get best director.

Up was good, but not the caliber of Pixar's usual IMO. Would be a shame for them to get the Oscar for that.

I think Avatar is going to get it, but then again everyone thought Star Wars: A New Hope was gonna win for its year. Inglorious was just plain awesome, but I think Watz's weirdo comments have not only jeopardized his almost assured Oscar win, but also Inglorious' chances of winning.

THEN, Up in the Air just might Annie Hall the smurfs.

Best movie of the year, for me, was Herzog's Bad Lieutenant.

Just to clarify, the "real" nominees are Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, and Up in the Air.

CityEscape, what would you pick on the list instead?

Probably The Hurt Locker. It really gets to me that the top grossing film EVER is just Pocahontas in 3D with cheesy dialogue, characters, and acting.

And Star Wars was "just" The Hidden Fortress, does that make diminish its achievement? Is it less of a cinematic milestone?

Plot is only on facet of cinema, and the fact is that Avatar, unlike the rest of the films on the list, is a landmark paradigm shift. It isn't flawless, but it is much more "important" than the rest of the films on the list.

The Hurt Locker was an amazing movie, and based on the anti-Cameron backlash, I actually give that one pretty even odds. (Sidenote: I remain the only one who voted for The Hurt Locker in the poll above. ) The two best cinematic experiences I had last year were viewing Avatar and The Hurt Locker, but Avatar is more important, and should be recognized as such.

My guess is Avatar
but Tarentino best director.

Mind you, I also thought Inglorious Basterds and Up were terrific.

I had to go with The Hurt Locker, it was my personal favorite of the past year, if only it would've gotten more attention from people it would make it a more fair game between Avatar and it. But, there is a chance for it.

I couldn't sit through Inglourious Basterds, somehow it was too slow paced, too much gibberish and stupid nonsense going on. I find this true to me for every Tarentino film I've seen. Avatar is just plain stupid if it wins. Yes it's an entertaining film, but apart from the whole IMAX experience, it's just mediocre. The Hurt Locker on the other hand is a great movie. And props to the director that knows what an explosion looks like instead of the endless fireballs you get watching any other action movie.

The slow, witty dialogue is what makes Tarantino movies great for me. The way he builds suspense via dialogue in the opening scene, the basement bar scene and others, in "Basterds" was fantastic, IMO. The Antagonist NEEDS to get some serious consideration for a best supporting actor award.

Waltz basically has best supporting actor in the bag, as long as he doesn't pull a Mel Gibson.

The "paradigm shift" from Avatar is for one reason only - the 3D graphics. If it weren't for the special effects it would have been a total dud because the plot, characters, dialogue and just about everything else were mediocre, at best.

I would argue that The Hurt Locker is actually a more important movie because it is the first movie to deal with its particular subject matter. In the same way that there are important movies that dealt with the Vietnam experience, The Hurt Locker deals with the Iraq experience. And it's one of the best told stories in movie making this past year.

Is this an award for technology, or storytelling?
