No ****. I really do have one. You leave it out in the sun and the solar panel charges an internal battery. It also has a built in radio. For emergency, there's a crank on the side you can use to generate power. Nifty little contraption. Forget where I got it.

i looked into this here in AZ (valley of the sun). the cost benefit seemed to be about 20 or so years out after all of the rebates an tax credits. and if you still have to pay to be connected to the grid. out here, they will buy any unused energy from you.

As for myself, all my exterior yard lighting is solar powered, be it moderately sized "lanterns" and perimeter lights. I also have solar powered vernier calipers here, and a solar powered / crank radio.
