Yes. Some of our fellow apes hate certain others of our fellow apes. They hate them so much that they are willing to give up their own lives as long as they can have the pleasure of blowing some of them up at the same time.

We live in a sick world.

I'd really wish I had something useful to post like "stay safe" or "I'm praying for you" but I'm not religious and I can't think of anything else that would be of benefit that is adequate to the enormity of this situation.

I only hope that there is some point - a certain threshold - of horror that we can reach which will finally move us as a species to be fed up enough to just give up on this "our tribe versus your tribe" type of thinking.

Yep, that point would be total extinction. Unfortunately the same mental spark (or whatever you want to call it) that drives us to be industrious and imaginative also makes us take ourselves and our "beliefs" way too seriously.

one can only hope that justice, will one day, be served.

My deepest sympathies and hope goes out to all victims of this senseless slaughter...

the point behind the attack was to reach the global media and to remind the world that osama err i mean terrorism is still alive. they accomplished that by taking foreigners as hostages. another plan of theirs was to totally collapse the three buildings (the biggest hotels in mumbai perhaps) but they couldn't succeed at that as they were no expecting such a strong resistance from the Indian counter terrorism forces.

all the terrorists were shot dead in the operation and a few could be arrested yesterday. now since a few were caught alive/injured, the intelligence forces would have access to a lot of information hopefully.

Hey man, glad you're safe!

This is the 9/11 for India. Been following this one closely for days. It's extremism/terrorism that's doing this..

The comment up above by hbarcat, "which will finally move us as a species to be fed up enough to just give up on this "our tribe versus your tribe" type of thinking.", while it plays well in sci-fi, won't play on this planet. There is too much diversity to come together on a species level. Too many different thought processes and different ways of doing things. Sadly, there is also too much greed running the show.

Man you think Osama is the reason for terrorism?
j/k don't mean to go political.

What's really sick is -not that I'm glad some people were not killed- they didn't kill muslims, some being Turks, and these murderers claim to be muslims. The book says it,do not kill but they.....words fail me here.

This just kicks me in the gut. Completely senseless. I feel for the families that lost a loved one. I feel for the Indian people too.

In the US, it's big-time news wherever you look. All the major market newspapers, all the major news websites, all the cable TV news channels - everywhere. That's the quantitative aspect.

Qualitatively, they've been focused mainly on getting all the hard news out, i.e. facts, figures, dates, places, etc. Now that the crisis has finally ended, however, the coverage seems to be shifting more to analysis of why this happened, digging out more background detail on how it transpired, and speculation about what might happen next (i.e. possible retribution from the Indian government?), etc.

according to http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...cle5265938.ece

there might be as many as 5 more still on the loose. Let's hope not, or if there are 5 more, that they are captured.

here's the article if anyone is interested.

"At least five terrorist gunmen have evaded capture in Mumbai and could make a secondary strike on India's financial capital, it was feared this morning.

Indian security forces are officially claiming that just ten militants – nine of whom were killed and one caught alive – were behind a co-ordinated terror attack that claimed nearly 200 lives.

However, the hijacked Indian fishing boat used by the gunmen to approach Mumbai, the crew of which were also slaughtered, had equipment for 15 men on board when it was discovered adrift off the city shore – suggesting that several gunmen could still be at large.

"Fifteen jackets were found, 15 toothbrushes even," one police source said. "That more men were involved is possible."

One theory being pursued by local investigators is that the missing men were involved in preparing for the attacks, by organising logistical support and carrying out reconnaissance work. Security experts say that it is conceivable that a force of just ten armed men could carry out an operation of the scale of the Mumbai strike, but only if they received extensive training and support from elsewhere.

The news came as Shakeel Ahmad, India's Deputy Home Minister, said that all the gunmen found so far were from Pakistan, an allegation that threatened to place further stress on the troubled relationship between the two nuclear powers.

The Indian government has raised the country's security to a "war level", claiming proof of a Pakistani link to the Mumbai strikes.

In response, Pakistan threatened to end military operations against Islamist militants - including the Taleban and al-Qaeda - on its border with Afghan border if it is forced into an "unwanted conflict" with Delhi.

Mumbai residents suspect that perhaps two dozen gunmen had stormed the city – an impression supported by early police and media reports on Wednesday night when a wave of attacks at at least eight locations rocked Mumbai. Angry at the Government's response to the crisis, they are reluctant to accept the assurances that all the terrorists are all accounted for.

Yesterday Shivraj Patil, India's Home Minister, resigned after a public backlash at the handling of the attack on Mumbai. People are furious that it took an elite group of commandos at least seven hours to reach the two luxury hotels that were attacked, by which time the gunmen had consolidated their positions and trapped hundreds of people.

It has also emerged that Rata Tata, the head of the Indian conglomerate that owns the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, had been warned of a possible attack on the hotel. He claimed, however, that no security arrangements could have prevented the highly-trained and organised militants.

"They did not go through the front entrance. All our security arrangements are in the front," he said. "They planned everything. I believe the first thing they did, they shot a sniffer dog and his handler."

The sole Mumbai gunman captured alive has already told police he was trained in Pakistan and ordered to "kill until the last breath", according to a leaked account of his interrogation.

Azam Amir Kasab, 21, a Pakistani national, claimed the terror strikes, which left nearly 200 dead, were intended to kill as many as 5,000 people and that he and his fellow militants were ordered to target whites – especially Britons and Americans. The claims were made in what a police source said was a transcript of his questioning. He also said that 24 men were trained in camps in Pakistan for the mission, according to one source. He has denied, however, that any of his accomplices are at large. Police are continuing to interrogate him.

Today, further details of how the militants were prepared for their strike on Mumbai emerged. Kasab told police he had undergone months of commando-style training in a Islamist militant camp in Pakistan.

The training was organised by Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistan-based militant group that Indian officials are convinced is behind the Mumbai attacks, and conducted by a former member of the Pakistani army, a police officer close to the interrogation claimed.

The training included how to handle weapons; bomb making; survival tactics; maritime training and even what to eat. The terrorist recruits were also placed on a rigorous physical training regime.

The elite Indian commandos that hunted the gunmen down in the two hotels they had occupied said that the terrorists must have been given military-style training, such was their bearing and effectiveness."

Sleeper cells - that's the scary part. I'm sure that there are many both with and without the knowledge of the Pakistani govt.
