what riff do you guys/gals generally use when your trying out a new bass in a store to put it through its paces?
I generally use Sabbath or Maiden riffs.....to be precise usually Into the Void and or the intro to N.I.B. Wratch Child or Running Free...
i guess what i'm asking is what are your "go to" riffs?
next....

Either that or I play Higher Ground over and over until they ask me to stop. |

Does this belong in Off Topic? |

I'll just play a good variety of things for a few minutes or enough time it takes to decide whether or not i like the instrument. |

The problem with me is that the rig is not the same rig as I play, so it's hard for me to feel for the real tone of a bass because it's not my rig. I try to set as clean a tone as possible, and try to match it with a cab config like mine usually a 4x10. Still, I friggin' hate trying out bass guitars in GC. Sam Ash is a little better. But when I'm in GC I take what I hear with a grain of salt. It's really hard to filter through all the kids playing nirvana riffs and the the crap bleating out of the TV's and the stuff over the radio and intercom. If I'm looking for a bass I'm looking for feel first. Craftsmanship next, and then tone last. I've found the 30 day policy, which would allow me to play through MY rig and perhaps in a live setting the best possible scenario. My recent purchase of my Warwick Corvette $$ was decided this way. It was between the Spector Euro and the Vette. I just liked the Vette better in a live setting. |

I usually play funky fingerstyle lines, so that is what I test a bass with. When testing a bass, I am usually only looking for feel. If I am shopping for an amp, I take one of my basses.

Can't Stop to see how it slaps
and many many different riffs to see how it does gritty rock stuff.

| | | | Most common bass line in my shop is Higher Ground. Most common guitar riff is Crazy Train with Back in Black as a close second.

I try to get a feel for the bass by playing in any kind of style I would ever play in.

instead, I like to play a note and let it ring out for as long as it will, then play then next note on the string a half step higher. I do this for the entire fretboard (can take a while on a 6-string bass) before moving on to whole notes and playing the same note across strings (i.e. 6th fret on E-string then 1st fret on A-string.) my goal when playing a bass plugged in at a store is to hear the evenness and nuances of the tone
but - I would only plug in a bass that I actually like the feel of, or a bass that had pickups and/or a preamp that I had not heard before.
my little bit of free-time is far too valuable to waste on impressing GuitarHeroIII wannabes in the local GC.
besides, if I want to hear and play a bass that's absolutely perfect for my preferences ... I simply plug in one that I made myself
all the best,
