The NFL thread got me thinking we could probably list all overused sports phrases from every sport we ever heard and then mock the TV and radio when we hear them like:
"We'll watch the film and get those things fixed in practice"
"He needs to step it up"
We didn't play with enough intensity"
"They were the better team today" |

"he's got a high motor"
"never gives up, motor guy"
"Scrappy"
"Possession receiver "
"smart"
they always slap these labels and its hilarious.

Instead of saying "ball", for the last ten years or so commentators have felt the need to specify "football". Same thing for "team" and even "field".
Instead of saying "the Gators are injured at running back" the new thing is to say, the Gators are injured at the running back position".
"In this league".....
Baseball:
"Walk-off" is played-out. I've even heard "walk-off" referenced to defensive plays.

"Keep it simple and just play our game."
"Put pucks at the net"
"protect our goaltender"
"stay oot of the box"
ie:
reporter - "so what was it tonight that led to the big victory"
player - "eh... We were able to keep it simple and play our game. We put the pucks to the net, played well in front of our goalie and managed to stay oot of the penalty box."
Or:
reporter - "what do you need to improve in order to win tomorrow night and avoid another big loss?"
player - "eh, we'll need to do a better job in front of our goalie and stay oot of the box. We gotta get back to our game, keep it simple and put pucks towards the net."

And, two really bad ones from golf announcers: "Great golf shot" (what other kind of shot would it have been?!) and "this putt will break from his left to his right" (as opposed to it breaking from his left to his left..)
