"owning" something.

Now, this may be a throwback to the "utorrent legality/illegality" thread, but it's been stuck in my head for a while. Would it make sense to stake a claim at the idea that anything that we/our families/friends have ever spent money on for an item has not actually been for the ownership of said property, but rather for the licensing that enables us to hold onto that property?

I was reading this legal blurb on the Wii Shop channel, about buying a game online, and on the points it mentions we don't own any of them, however we have a license to them?

I remember back when emulating was still really huge, you were allowed to have roms on your PC as long as you had an original storebought copy of the game.

You still are.......the problem now is that anyone can send anyone an email of send file and try and go back with a "well my mate is good friends with me and he has a copy of the game and he wanted me to have a copy on my hard drive so that he could get the copy off of me and put it back on his hard drive so that he could have a copy of the game if said game broke on him, so technically I'm just doing him a favor and I happen to be doing nothing illegal" argument.

Does it count if I used to have the physical game?

I still rom like crazy, I still have all of my old ones before they got taken down. I've played through Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time like 50 times.

Well, I've been bootlegging for almost 10 years on the internet, and the police haven't knocked down my door yet. I started bootlegging college books now. It's that serious.

heh, once through LOZ: OOT was enough for me.

but i just thought about all the hacking and bootlegging people have to go through with just video games alone, as well as with CDs, and I thought "isn't it amazing the lengths people will go to attempt to make something their own?"

lol there's also thoughts of mine in relation to people and the word "need" lol which realistically should never be such a frequented word to relate to a person's life.

Really, the original question is more of a philosophical thought experiment, since the answer doesn't actually affect reality in any way. Interesting question, but I don't think talkbass is going to be the most conducive place for such a conversation.

On a side note, I heard some recent statistic that stated that 70% of American teens are illegally downloading files. I think it's safe to assume at this point that open file sharing will be the way of the future and people who made their living off of the actual physical reproduction of "intellectual property" will need to find new ways to profit from said properties. The paradigm is most certainly shifting.
