East.
The family and I are moving from Washington state to the New London, New Hampshire area. We're planning on leaving here between October 21-23, and will be driving with our dog while all of our belongings and one of our vehicles are being shipped via moving company.
The wife and I both have accepted jobs in the area, so off we go. We're excited to go, but stressed out about a cross country move as well. It looks like I'll have to buy a snow blower. They don't even sell those things around here.

If you pass near Chicago and need a place to stay or have time for a meal, hit me up! My new place has a second bedroom (with a bed, even ), and my girlfriend and I will have the place all set up by then.

I am trying to arrange our drive so we stop through Chicago around dinner time. I appreciate the offer of a place to stay, but we have our dog with us so I don't want to impose.

-Mike | Cool, just let me know. Oh yeah, this building is strictly a no-pet deal, so that would not work.

New London is about a 3rd of the way up in the state, so you'll get some decent snow volumes. We lived in southern NH (Atkinson) for 5 years while I was on a contract in Boston .... the first year there it started snowing in October and never stopped until April ....
Beautiful state, nice people, zero night life .... but as Relic said, Joisey isn't that far away |

Side question, how did you and your wife manage to both find jobs that far away? Did you both have to go out there several times for interviews and whatnot? I'm just curious as how one would go about getting a job in another part of the country.

I had been there last year as a contractor to do some work for a software vendor they contracted with. I brought my wife along for a mini-vacation, but she ended up coming in with me to work one day since she knows how to use the software I install. At the end of the week, the CIO said it would be great if we both worked for him. He asked in August 2011 if we were still interested in working for him. He put together a financial package we could not turn down, so we accepted the offers.
But I did interview for another job in western Massachusetts late 2010. The company paid my travel expenses to fly out for an interview and spend a couple days to meet the staff and survey the options of moving. That one didn't work out. My wife had the same opportunity in 2009 with a company in the York, Maine area. They flew her out for an interview/meet-n-greet.

One nice thing about NH is the lack of sales tax, I'm sure there's other stuff, but the only other time I've spent in NH is at the beach. They have great wilderness/outdoors activities. It's similar to WA in that sense. I'd also recommend Maine to visit. There's also going to be a New England gtg in Nov. Come on over.

It is now mandatory that you memorize all of the following by heart... GRANITE STATE OF MIND (Jay-Z Parody - The SSP) - YouTube
(My son does).
A few principles to bear in mind:
1) even after you've been living here for thirty years, no one will EVER say you are "from here."
2) "Wicked" is an adverb meaning "extremely," as in "the snow is wicked deep" or "it's wicked cold out" or "we've had no power for a wicked long time." It can sometimes be used as an adjective meaning "awesome," the way California surfers use it.
3) "Yes" is properly pronounced "Ayuh." "Ayuh" is properly pronounced "eye-YUH" where that final H is a glottal stop, like when you say "foot" without really pronouncing the T. If you don't know how to do a glottal stop don't bother trying. Nothing screams "OUTSIDER INFIDEL" like a failed attempt to pronounce "Ayuh."
4) If you have to ask for directions somewhere, you're probably not really supposed to be there anyway.
5) NH is Red Sox country. If you are a fan of any other baseball team, practice lies and deceit to conceal this unfortunate fact. If you are a Yankees fan, build a bomb shelter under your house and stock up on bullets and canned goods. However, all people from Massachusetts are the devil who do not deserve their baseball team.
6) As far as music goes, the hub is Manchester, aka Manchvegas, the nearest excuse we have for something that vaguely resembles a city. In New London, you won't be too far from it but you won't be too close either.
Actually, yeah, New London is a really lovely town, and it is a great state. Congratulations on the new job and I hope I get to cross paths with you sometime!
