parents : thoughts on posting pics of your kids.

heya folks

i'm curious what your thoughts are on posting pics of your kids on the internet. i've been pretty sparse with the pictures of my daughter - in fact, to the best of my knowledge i've only posted 1 or 2 on talkbass, and none anywhere else.

i do have a cute little 2 second clip of her that i think has serious meme potential (i may be biased ), but i'm not sure i even want that to happen, if you know what i mean.

My wife posts pictures of our kids relentlessly on FB. I do so sparingly. As near as I can tell, the only people ever interested in looking at 'em are friends and family.

Not a parent, so I can't weigh in, but I've always been wary of posting pictures of anyone I know on message boards, including friends, family members and significant others. I just feel like I need to ask them permission to put a photo of them in such a public place. It's kind of weird going to someone you know and saying "Hey can I post of picture with you in it on a message board?!"

With kids I don't know. It depends, I guess, as you have to realize that there are hundreds of people you don't know looking at it all with the ability to right-click and save picture as. You never really know what kinds of people are out there.

FB I feel is slightly different because you can directly control who sees your photos, i.e. making them only available to your Facebook friends, who are likely your friends and family.

yeah, i keep coming back to that - who exactly is going to see the picture, and do i have a problem with that?

i mean, on the one hand, i don't take her out in public with a veil on, so it's not like anyone walking by doesn't see her, but somehow a picture on the web is different, i guess.

I don't have a problem with posting pics of my son, but I do pause if it's a picture of him that might give some sicko a way to get off over it. Like a picture of him with his shirt off, or in his underwear or something that is also potentially embarrassing to him.

EDIT: On the otherhand my son gets modeling gigs every now and then so it's kind of inevitable that he'll end up on the internet beyond my control.

Is it different? Aren't there security cameras all over the place in public? What's to stop Joe Schmoe from covertly snapping a pic with his camera phone and posting it on the web?

Now, I don't have pictures of my daughter all over the web -- just one or two here on TB -- but I guess I feel like if I post the pictures then I can control the content.

I very rarely post photos of my kids to "open" sites.

I post them to FB sometimes, but limit access to my (small) group of friends / family.

that's true, i think about that sometimes, and frankly, it makes me want a put her in a burkha sometimes .

i guess the fact that i get some annonymous hate mail every once in a while from a few psychos (usually dipturds i've had to permaban from talkbass) makes me extra sensative to that. i don't care for myself - i can take care of myself - these guys are inate cowards (hi bobxbob ) , but some of these guys - you'd be amazed. based on how they act and what they send i wouldn't put anything past them, despite that most of them i know alot more about them then they think i do. .

I am distrustful of the interwebz in general. Maybe I'm just old. Maybe I'm a genius!

If you have qualms about it at all, don't do it. Once a thing hit's the web, it's impossible to take it back off.

BTW JT, if you're tired of the anonymous hate mail, I could send you some with my return address on it.

I avoid posting any pics on the internet whatsoever that reveal what I look like. The potential for them to be maliciously 'shopped is enough for me to refrain from letting my likeness go up online. If I had kids, I would never post their pictures, just as I would never post mine. Slightly paranoid, yes, but I think of it as abstinence, except that instead of accidentally making babies or getting the clap, my image goes unsullied.

I post some pics of my kids for other friends and family to see, but never identify them by full name.

I think I posted a picture of my gut here and that was it. I feel weird talking about or showing pictures from my personal life.

Only Mark Wilson has seen my extremely hot girlfriend.

I haven't posted any pics of my kid on TB. Were I still a supporting member I might consider posting one in the lounge. I do post pics of him on Facebook.

I did end up posting some pics of my daughter when I wrote the thread on her service dog Shenandoah. I wasn't thrilled about doing it, but I thought the photos would make it more real. I was especially concerned about the hospital photos where she's wearing a gown.

While I was bothered by the fact that someone might use the photos for nefarious purposes, I felt the good it did publicizing autism service dogs outweighed the negative potential for weirdos to have their fun.

I don't generally like posting photos of her though. She's cute, but she's profoundly disabled, and so I'm somewhat overprotective of her.

My name and likenesss is out there in cyberspace due to reviews of gigs and other things with the music media. So I don't worry too much about posting pics of myself. However, I agree with the Jerose that I don't like to post pics with other people in it. I have a folder with pics of my girlfriend on my MySpace, and that's a private folder (even with my MySpace being private).
