He has a career, is working on his masters in engineering part time, and is a relatively normal guy (though a bit of a goofball). However, he seems to have no interest in moving out anytime soon. He has no girlfriend, and no friends that are single that he could move in with. My parents want him out, but there he stays. So they charge him rent. Something like $600 a month I think? Considering his situation, I think they charge him rent as an incentive to grow up and move out. He has always been lagging behind a bit when it comes to maturing. His room at my parent's house still looks the same as it did when he was 12yrs old or so.
As a new parent, I hope I'm never put in this position with my son as my brother has done to my parents. I moved out and got married right after college at age 23-24. I hope my son does the same, but I have a looooonnng time to think about that.

But I don't think it would be wrong for a parent to charge rent if the kid is an adult, a dropout, or a total deadbeat. Nowadays I think it would not be appropriate to charge rent to a busy student, and to be fair, many of us stay in school until 22, and sometimes well beyond. It is really not in the parents' best interests to charge money to a student who cannot afford it.

If I was doing well financially and didn't really need it, I would still do it and put it into some sort of fund or acct for them for later.
Life 'aint easy. Better they learn it at home where there's a safety net then out in the real world later where there is no safety net.

i will be setting aside his rent money , or possibly open an interest bearing
savings account in his name , with the intention of giving it to him
whenever he decides to move out .
he will have to live by the same rules as i would expect any adult renter to live by ...
the only exception would be if he was enrolled , with passing grades ,
at school or university .
i understand how hard it can be to go to school full time , and still have to work a part time job .

At the time ('97-'98) they paid $300 month + $50 a month for food.
They moved out within 3 months of each other. For the Christmas after they moved out, we gave them the money back (over $8K for our daughter, almost $7K for our son). But while they were living with us as adults they learned to budget properly ..... |

If you give children things for nothing they never learn their value and turn into lazy adults who expect everything for nothing. |
