partition external hd with 2 different file format?

I know it can be done on a normal hard drive, when you dual boot with say, Windows and a Linux distro. or even with Mac and Windows with bootcamp. But here, with the new releases of games like Socom over the Playstation Network, I want a bigger hard drive and thought I could partition my 500 gb external hd with the mac filesystem and fat 32 (for the playstation 3) I'm able to partition it, but for some reason I cannot make a mac filesystem partition and a fat 32. I don't want to format the HD because I have 200 gb of back ups. I can, however, format it all as fat 32. Maybe I could transfer all the data unto my computer and try formating everything into fat 32 and afterwards try making a mac filesystem partition? but if I can that there has to be a way to do it the other way around... anyone help?

edit: read that mac can read/write fat 32, but doesn't fat 32 have a 4 gb limit size? I don't want that....

What are you using to partition it? I always use gparted on a Linux live CD to do this kind of stuff.
Be sure you have all your stuff at the front of the drive before you repartition.

I use Disk Utility on Mac OS X Leopard.. I don't have any PC lying around here saddly. I thought about using the Linux Live CD or the Windows one.. but I'm not sure if it's even possible to boot with Linux without using a 3rd party app or Bootcamp?

I remember partition magic (which was a PC program, I don't know if they have a mac version) had pretty much every capability you could want. You can re-arrange and format partitions without formatting your whole drive.
