PC problems...

Hi guys,

When I went to boot my PC last night I got a BIOS checksum error and it was looking for a floppy to reinstall the BIOS. The last couple of times I've tried to boot it has taken a bit longer than usual to get to POST.

I'd had a few intermittent problems with the PC where it sometimes wouldn't POST and then on a reboot would make a claim about overclocking having failed (even when nothing had been overclocked).

It's an ASUS P5K motherboard with an intel Q6600. It's about 5-6 years old, going to try a new CMOS battery tonight, I've hunted down a floppy disc and downloaded the most uptodate BIOS version to try putting that on, any other recommendations, or is there a good chance it's goosed?

I'm about a third of the way through writing my thesis so, yeah, not the greatest of times got the ol' PC to stop working!

Don't know about the pc problem, but just make sure you backup your thesis next time you manage to get the pc working! Just to make sure...

That part isn't an issue thankfully! The harddrive should be fine, if not I have it backed up on dropbox, google drive and a USB pen

It's more the ease of having a working PC at home to do the work on!

it's probably the cmos battery. by far the most likely problem IMO. unless you recently updated the bios, the other likelihood is that the system lost power while running, like a power outage or accidental cord removal. restore defaults in cmos, save, restart.

If you can get into the BIOS then it would be worth a try at resetting the BIOS defaults first. If it boots ok after that but fails again when you switch it off then it points needing a new BIOS backup battery.

You could try a BIOS upgrade but I have never found that cured anything.

After that you are down to a motherboard or CPU problem.

Cheers, kinda hoping that's what it is! Just thought I'd check what other people thought because I can't do anything else until tonight

(no accidental loss, had been using it the previous night and it had shutdown as normal)

I'm not sure if I could get into the BIOS, that's the thing. It was late last night and didn't want to arse about, it was more with the checksum error popping up I thought it might have been slightly arsed up.

It's been a while since I played with PCs but if I remember correctly if you pull the battery out and give it a few minutes before you try booting then it should automatically take you into the BIOS setup as it has lost all it's settings.

They say the CMOS only loses when the battery itself dies.

I hate those politically correct problems. Oh well, such is the life of an internet gangsta.

The issue I experienced once was that the BIOS itself got corrupted. Managed to reload it and never had issues afterwards.

Good luck!

Popping the battery and a pin swap got it going, she's alive!
