PCI to SATA card, will this work??

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm pretty tech savvy, build all my own computers and I'm sure this will work, but I never buy anything without asking the TB geek squad first.
The problem:
I need to run a SATA DVD burner and maybe a backup SATA HDD on my DAW. The mobo, an Abit IS7V2 has 2 SATA I ports and the onboard drivers. However, as you are aware, I have to either install SP2 or SP3 to get winXP SATA drivers or install them from a floppy during a fresh WinXP install. This is a problem for 2 reasons: 1) because the system is extremely stable, reliable and smooth and I have no intention of reinstalling winxp and running the risk of upsetting my happy little system; 2) my audio cards, Aardvark Q10's, have known issues with sp2 & sp3 and I love them and plan to keep them as long as they work.
The solution:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16816102062
The system currently is: Abit IS7V2 mobo, socket 478 P4 @ 2.4GHz, 2 GB RAM, WinXP SP1, Cubase SE, 2xAardvark Q10 cards, Plextor CD writer (ATA), 80GB ATA C drive for the system, 200GB ATA D drive for the tracks. It is bare bones software wise and is never on the internet and is never used for anything but audio. So, am I right? Will this card do what I want it to without screwing up my system?? Thanks.

Surely there is some way to get the Sata drivers working on SP1?

Either way, my old system only had a couple sata ports, and I needed a few more and used a similar card without any issue what-so-ever. But granted, that was for HDDs, though I can't see why there would be any reason to think it wouldnt work with a DVD burner.

Any reason you're going for the Promise card instead of something cheaper?

Well, cheap isn't exactly the goal, but I'm sure I could find one cheaper. Besides, this one got the most positive reviews of any that I saw, even some more expensive ones, granted I ain't seen 'em all...........
