Take a trip out onto the Navajo Indian Reservation!
Living in harmony with Mother Earth...... Yeah Right!!!
litter is everywhere!
I read somewhere that there isn't a beach on the planet that doesn't have a plastic water bottle (or part of one) on in. |

Not really sure how that makes me ignorant, but if it makes you feel superior, go ahead and name-call. |

A rich person can litter just as much as a poorer person. | Sadly this is pretty true. I've lived in a variety of neighborhoods, right now I have an apartment in a fairly low income neighborhood. There's ALWAYS trash in the parking lot and all around the neighborhood. |

It's the same with every minority that has been treated in similar ways. Alcoholism, crime, little care for the system (warranted). |

I am a smoker. When my cigarette is finished I keep the cigarette end and look for a thrash can for a while. Sometimes I can't come across one for a good amount of time and realize the people who live in the area don't give a **** about their streets as much as I do. After that, I lover my level of interest to keep the streets clean to their level.
Sometimes, though, I see the pavement has a few cigarette butts per square meter and add one more to the collection. This is a wrong behavior, I admit.

You can thank Madison Avenue for that one.
But I would agree with you that the term "lazy dirtbag" seems to satisfy the senses better and may be more befitting.

As populations become wealthier, they have more resources at their disposal, and more time, to think about things like their environment. Poor communities tend to have survival in mind. |

Many of those litterbugs learned to stop littering because littering went on a decline after those PSA's from the 70's. When I was coming up I would never have left my trash. I remember the ads but before that, I remember getting scolded for throwing trash on the ground. I didin't know it wasn't cool and had to be taught. I think if people aren't exposed to the idea, they're not necessarily going to know.
I don't see too many ads these days teaching kids not to litter and I think we have a generation that has forgetton the meaning of cleaning up after themselves. Now if you got older fol through their trash on the ground, then I think you got a dirtbag. Otherwise, I think the younger folk just need an education. Just my 2¢ YMMV Get off my lawn.

But when some of these kids seeeing their worthless parents tossing Budweiser cans out the car window they grow up thinking it's "cool" to do so. I do also agree with what another poster said, however, in that littering is at least somewhat tied to SES. Uneducated and apathetic types generally have a lower moral compass. I'll gladly don my flame suit, because it is what it is!
