Persuasive Speech Topic

Sign in to disble this ad
I need a persuasive speech topic for my public speaking class. I was wondering if someone could help me out a little bit. The only thing is that, the topic can not be any of the typical topics, like death penalty, abortion or going "green". The only one I can think of will probably give people the wrong view of me. I was wondering possibly if anyone has any recommendations? Possibly bass related? Thanks

Can it be of a controversial nature?

You could build a legit-sounding argument on how tides are not affected by the moon, but by the slow movement of Earth's tectonic plates.

You could talk about the previous generations movement towards gender equality, and getting more women in the workplace, and how it affected the current generation, as more families than ever were 2 income families, and the children had significantly less parental interaction.

If you wanted, you could go all militant, and essentially blame feminism for todays vastly increased societal dependence on antidepressants.

I remember this speech in college, mine was to persuade people to load up on coffee to study for their finals. My arguments included a whole laundry list of reasons why caffeine was safe, along with some historical figures who accomplished many great things partially because of this particular addiction. Technically speaking I believe I cited one study that deemed caffeine perfectly harmless, and then filled in the gaps discussing Voltaire.

I made it funny, and it went over well. I remember one lady did a religious speech, trying to persuade people to believe exactly what she believed, with explicit details including the exact dimensions of her choice of afterlife. It did not go over well.

Coffee will always go over in a classroom better than religion. Mmm, coffee...

The purpose of the exercise is to present a persuasive argument. Few things could be as powerful as a persuasive presentation of a trivial subject.

How about; "The importance of going home", "The case for/against Broccoli" you choose, "The case for/against Sodium Vapor Street Lamps", "Vegetable oil or Tallow for deep frying?"

Lay out the advantage and criticism of your cause but never lose site of the purpose, to persuade. Another perk for keeping it trivial is you can get a way with a little tongue in cheek humor.

Don't forget the speech form; tell them what you will tell them, tell them why they should listen, tell them, tell them what you told them.

Argue in favor in buying a water filter (or drinking tap water) instead of buying plastic bottles and polluting the environment.
