I agree, but in the event of a problem, it has a high radioactivity footprint. In light of the situation in Japan, it's going to be tough to sell the American public on the fact that nuclear energy is safer than fossil fuel energy (which it is).
One study puts the annual number of premature deaths due to fossil fuel energy production at
20,000 in the U.S. alone. That number will be much larger in countries with emerging economies and less stringent environmental laws.
