Photo search engine

Lets say, for instance, you come across a pic of something or someone and you don't know who or what it is. Are there any search engines that will allow you to enter the pic into the search field, rather than a standard text entry?

Just curious...

None that I know of, however it would be cool to be able to drag and drop a picture into a search field and get information on it. If that's what you're talking about I really don't think there is a search engine out there that can decode the information in a digital image and then trace it to it's origin.

As far as I know all search engines work on text, be it the text in a description of the picture on the website or words in the file/address of that picture.

If you have a copy of the picture you can right click on it and then copy and past the information from the "properties" section into a search engine. Sometimes that works.

That was it! Just think...no more "who is she, she's flippin' GORGEOUS" comments in the "hot bass-player chick" topics; just drag & drop and find your eye candy!

Depends on the quality you're looking for the in result.

If you want a GREAT result, it doesn't exist.
If you want a TERRIBLE result, there's 4chan.

and BTW, there just has to be this technology already, i'm sure all the secret squirrels use it already..

as well, apple put a facial recognition on their latest version of iPhoto.. what it's able to do is to use some sort of facial recog to sort photos into defined folders...

There is a technology like that out there.

For example a software company here in Iceland is developing this kind of software to aid the police in identifying children pornography pictures. That way the police officers won't have to look at each picture when such a case comes up. They just run them through a big database which identifies the pictures as child pornography.

When such a technology is available to the public, that is another matter...

I think showing anything more then EXIF data would be kind of an invasion of privacy. There may even be a website already that does that, because there are tons of programs that do it.

I was thinking the same thing, but could you imagine the processing power it would take. Hundreds of thousand, possibly millions of people all dragging and dropping photos into google's new photo search engine and they're all looking for pron.

Even worse. You're not looking for pron, but that's what you get.

Qbic works with very basic image information, like dominant color and contrast ratio. That's efficient in certain situations, but not really with the actual nature of the content.

Maybe the abundance of light beige could make it effective with porn pictures, but in general, this ain't no face recognition program.

Not quite what the OP is looking for. not in its current implementation, anyway.

That's the bad thing about search engines. There is so much smut out there, that you can search for almost anything and get at least a few bad results.
