Pi or e?

What's your favorite mathematical constant? :hyper::hyper:

iamlowsound 01-12-2013 01:24 PM

Pi, I use it almost everyday for my job, I can't remember the last time I had to use e.

Ziltoid 01-12-2013 01:26 PM

I'm naturally inclined to say e :D

Pi is for geometry-lovers. Go on and try some e. It will get you through Calculus.

I love geometry, it is part of my everyday job. I can do calculus, but I really can't stand it.

I love geometry, it is part of my everyday job. I can do calculus, but I really can't stand it and I was glad when I never had to touch it again.

i

You didn't say it had to be real.....;)

Sequimite 01-12-2013 01:53 PM

e is elitest.

My mathematical constant:

The amount of money I have will be < the amount of gear I want to buy.

You're imagining things. :)

My favourite physical constant belongs to Planck.

He may be imagining things, but I bet that sometimes he can be so square that he keeps things real.:hiding:

Rush-2112 01-12-2013 02:37 PM

Sweet thread :D

As a fan of statistics, I'm gonna go with the Phi-coefficient, aka golden ratio. Tau is great too :hyper:

Btw if you like Pi, you NEED to check out this vid:

Very good.

For those that haven't heard it..... there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand binary and those that don't.

Best maths joke ever.

Jazz Ad 01-12-2013 03:02 PM

No love for i? I kinda like i, although it tends to be squared and then shows negative behaviors.

A fascinating fact about φ is that its inverse is 1 less than itself, and its square is 1 more than itself. Knowing that, you can say φ2-φ-1=0, so:
(-(-1)+((-1)2-4(1)(-1))0.5)/2(1)=(1+50.5)/2
φ= 1.618033...
φ-1= 0.618033...
φ2= 2.618033...
Mindblowing!

:D

You use e in statistics, too.:hyper:

For instance, normal distribution:
f(x)=(σ(2*π)0.5)-1*e(-(x-μ)/2σ)2

You're too late. How very irrational of you :)

An infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar. The first one says "I'll have a pint," and then each next one says "and I'll have half of what he's having." The bartender says "You're all idiots!" and pulls two pints.

What does a frustrated mathematician say to his children when they misbehave? "If I've told you n times, I've told you n+1 times!"

How do you insult a mathematician? Tell him his brain is smaller than any ɛ>0.

:hyper:

Ziltoid 01-12-2013 03:18 PM

You guys would probably like the Spiked Math webcomic.

Atoz 01-12-2013 03:58 PM

I like φ because it's the most aesthetically pleasing constant.
