What's the big deal? There are pictures of black folks as slaves in the USA from that era all over the internet.

I think it's cool when history is discovered.

Very few of the pictures show slave children, and this picture indentifies the child by name, and connects the kid to a bill of sale. As a historical document and artifact, it is pretty remarkable.

The photo was also taken by one of the most famous studio operations of that era which adds to its value too.

That is why this is a big deal.

I agree. I can't help but notice the worry in the children's faces. Man, I just can't imagine the horror. It really hits me as a father to imagine that this (obviously under different circumstances) could have been my own son. I would never want to see that kind of worry on his face.

While doing title research in Plaquemines Parish a few years ago, we needed to go back to "patent" (figure the Louisiana Purchase was in 1803, so...). Obviously, a lot of the older stuff was in French, so we just copied it and took it into the office for translation. It was kinda sad to hear my coworker, after reading through them, announce "these are Acts of Sale....for people".

I've read a lot of weird and sometimes immoral/illegal stuff going through old records, but that one always sits way wrong.

Wow, incredible shot. Matthew Brady was one of the first war photographers and photo journalist in history. Can you imagine lugging around glass plates and a view camera on a tripod to get those shots? The faces of those kids have as much impact today as modern shots of kids in a war zone. That is a great record of the tragedy of slavery.

Interesting comment. And very insensitive to a horrific period in this countries history. A history that a lot of people would love to forget.

And the pic is a strong reminder of how the children were also a part of the atrocities that slavery was(and to a great deal, still to this very day).

...And? I must be missing the point. Neither picture, slaves, or pictures of slaves are new things. Why is this important?

Let's say someone found lost recordings of the Beatles. Neither recordings, the Beatles, or recordings of the Beatles are new things. Why is this important?

No question around here.
French people conveniently forgot that most slaves were traded in Bordeaux before going to America.

It wouldn't be. Sure, it would be on the news because there's money to be made. But I don't even see that potential in this. Why is it being reported?

I really would like those who have chips on their shoulders of any kind to knock it off. I posted an interesting piece of history. We have all heard all the debates about slavery and who did or didn't do whatever. I really want anyone who wants an argument to go elsewhere.

As to why this picture is important, I addressed that earlier. If you disagreee with that assessment, fine. We all have a right to our opinions.
