Please don't be this careless...

So my girlfriend's father is retiring next year. He was sent a retirement package that may or may not have his social security information in it. Apparently after he got the mail he gathered some other things that he needed to go with the packet including a voided check.

For some reason he went back outside with all this stuff in a basket of some sort, got scatter brained and left it on the porch outside. He got in his car and left and when he got home it was gone. He lives alone, so it had to have been stolen.

So now this person has:

1) Bank Account & Routing Number
2) Address
3) Social Security Number (possibly, we don't know if it was in the packet)

According to my girlfriend he also leaves scraps of paper with passwords on them in his wallet.

Please do NOT be this careless..I'm at a loss for words honestly. We're doing all we can to help him, but there is only so much we can do in the worst case scenario.

Poor guy. I misplace mail all the time but so far, it's just been INSIDE the apartment. Often joke with my kids that if I can throw my leg over a Rascal (personal mobility scooter), I can throw it over a Hayabusa (Suzuki GSX1300R).

If his SS# was not in the packet, its a simple matter to call the bank explain that his account & routing # has been compromised; the bank will usually offer to change the account # for no charge (B of A did this for my wife).

The address? A person could could glean a name and address (& phone #) from a discarded phone bill.... I wouldnt worry too much about that.

But the SS#.... thats delicate....Hope it wasnt in the materials left on the porch.

+1 to what skychief said.

Contact the bank and explain, a new set of details shouldn't cost.

Address can happen easily enough anyway (phonebook etc).

Can't comment on the social security number, but can you contact them and maybe they can give some advice?

Well he found the packet. It turns out he didn't leave it outside, but he left it in his locker at work.

Thank god for that, but the fact that he was so convinced he left it in that particular of a place and thought it was stolen and had no memory of actually leaving it at work is a concern for us.

Glad he had it after all!

However, is he quite often this forgetful? Maybe something that's needing checked out?

Is the bank account and routing number really such a big deal? You disclose that information every time you write someone a check.

Yes it is. Some a-hole stole my wifes bank account # and depleteted her entire account (around $1700) in a day.

Fortunately, the bank reimbursed us the total amount minus $50.
