Is "Pm'd" necessary?

Just wondering, why do people put "Pm'd" on for sale threads. Obviously, I know what it means, but I was wondering if it is necessary to tell the seller that you pm'd him. Is there some forum rule that I don't know about? Or is it just common courtesy?

Seems to be courtesy for priced-to-sell stuff as well as hard to find stuff.. I think it helps people browsing the forums to temper their expectations and get a sense of general interest.


Necessary though? I wouldn't call it that.

I sometimes do it as a free bump to the seller- if I'm moreless tire-kicking; if I really want something, I'm more sneaky...

Some people have their pop-up PM notifications turned off. In this case, it's a courtesy to the seller to let them know to check their inbox.

I do it to make it easier to find the thread later if I happen to get lucky and buy something from it.

Feedback requires the original URL and looking through "find all posts by fhm555" is quicker and easier than browsing through (sometimes) page after page after page of thread titles trying to guess which one it was, or just look for the little black dot indicating you posted to it. Either way, it gives me two easy options for quickly locating the thread I bought an item from when it's time to leave feedback.

if i really like an item, i never post "PM'd" to the seller so it won't "bump" to the top.

It's kinda like calling dibs. I can see a potential buyer that's impulse shopping being deterred by seeing PMd in the thread.

I would never post it, why bump the item I want so more can see it?
