So I have pneumonia. It really sucks. I blame it on smoking, personally, which is why I'm planning on quitting. However being couped up is driving me nuts. I haven't left my house since coming back from the ER on Tuesday. Well thats sort of a lie, I walked outside once for 5 minutes and sat around and played bass for a bit.
I was running a high fever for two days and nothing could break it. Since it felt like my eyes and ears were going to pop and it was getting hard to maintain consciousness I decided to go to the hospital. I hope that doesn't sound as dramatic as it reads. I have medicaid and its the only place I could go.
Now I sit around, eating medication and EmergenC, hoping to get better. I've lost 15lbs this week and I feel weaker than Maki walking past a Korean brothel. I'm supposed to be on vacation right now.
Now, mayhap someone who knows something about medicine can help me. I started coughing up green phlegm in the beginning because I had the lung infection. As of last night it was clear and I was overjoyed. Now its streaked with lots of red and sometimes yellow or brown. I figure the brown is dried blood. Now, oh sage medical advisers, am I getting better or worse? I'm hoping the blood is just from coughing a lot. Then again, I've never coughed blood before.

| | | | Okay. So we know the yellow/green is infection. The brown mucus is from smoking. The red is blood. It is possible to burst a small blood vessel from the coughing. HOWEVER, if there is a lot, and it is bright red, you are advised to go back to the hospital. I asked how long the bleeding would occur from the burst vessel and was told a day, and if it is longer than that than seek medical attention. Be cautious if you do not go and there really is a lot of blood. I do not know how to define what "a lot" or "not a lot" mean.
I wish you the best of health to you. I had pneumonia when I was young. Had both lungs filled with water and I was not breathing correctly. Found out that if I was not taken the hospital at that very moment, I probably would of died within minutes.

I hope it's short lived and your back up and about soon, take it easy.

Its been red since this morning but I'll have periods of clear or just yellow mucus. I've only had a few times where its all red, but most of the time its just got some fat streaks in it.

It may not not be unusual but there's a bad strain of pneumonia going around. I knew someone who had it recently. 'Knew' isn't a typo- she was 36. Went into the hospital and didn't leave under her own power. |

I've also been ill in the past, too, where I've coughed so hard for so long that I've torn connecting tissue between my ribs. They said I was lucky I didn't crack any ribs. Hurt like I had and recovery was just as long. Didn't cough up any blood then, either.
I'd listen to PapaD and if it's more than just a tinge here and there, go back to the hospital. Better to be safe and make sure.
Hope it's nothing, though, and that you recover quickly.
