Really? Could the teacher be that much of a tool?

Vacaville student docked 25 points on test for saying 'God bless you' | news10.net

Some people get really offended when my friends and I say "god**** you!" to each other after a sneeze in public.

"The health class is a one-semester course that is required for graduation."

Lol, teacher with a God complex doesn't want to hear any mention of any competitors.

Do they deduct points for saying "goodbye", too? That is an abbreviation of "god be with ye".

I'd say it more and more, out of spite.

Let him explain to the schools brass knobs why his entire class is failing.

I don't understand this. Gesundheit, bless you, god bless you, even an Islamic saying, it's all just showing that the person cares about you and is polite enough to say something when you sneeze.

Ugh.

What a tool. It's possible see his reasoning (maybe) about there not actually being any evil spirits to be warded out, but it's a very common phrase that almost everybody uses. Perhaps just a comment to the class about the Dark Ages and the march of progress would have been apt, but not docking grades and getting yourself on the news.

"The school’s principal has stated that the disciplinary measure will not be tolerated."

Calif. Teacher Enforces ‘Bless You’ Ban For Classroom Sneezes « CBS Los Angeles

I would say that the teacher's credibility with the school and parents is now in need of serious repair (no principal enjoys publicity of this type). Really, well done. Being optimistic, perhaps the school will see an outbreak of Quakerishly polite students blessing each other at every opportunity.

i actually had a similar thing happen in my anthropology class a few semesters ago.

the teacher thought it to be disruptive, and asked someone not to "comment" on someone else sneezing. the class questioned the professor like "but thats what you say when someone sneezes, its rude not to." the professor said she'd never heard of such a thing (she was from the south, so who knows?) and then continued on with her lesson. weird. i dropped that class eventually.

The headline mentions a test but the article offers no further information. Speaking aloud during a test, even if someone just sneezed, is more serious than doing so in regular classroom hours. It's too vague to conclude whether I should be outraged or not.

If a teacher has an issue with it and wants to discipline the students, he should use a different method. You start messing with grades, then all kinds of issues with GPA, class rank, etc start coming into play. Then it gets really testy.

There also seems to be a suspicious amount of sneezing in this "health class".

Either way it's a minor infraction. To take 25 points off of someone's grade is ridiculous.

It's a minor infraction during class. Not if it's during a test.

Yes it is. Don't be ridiculous. Saying any sort of thing like that during an exam is perfectly reasonable and polite, if not expected. But hey, I was raised in the south to be a proper gentleman and to have manners. YMMV.

It's not ridiculous to require that students don't communicate with each other during a test, even if it's to say "God bless you," "Gesundheit," "Salud," or none of the above.

In my school, any communication between students during a test would result in an automatic 0 and a trip to the Head's office.

im with you.

during a (highschool) test ive seen much worse than saying "god bless you."

you really think thats out of line? i get that it might be distracting, but for what, 3 seconds? test or not. its rude not to say it.

This teacher sounds more like an idiot than anything else. Being southern has nothing to do with it. I was in Target the other day and sneezed and had some one say "Bless you" to me.
