Polanski, 76, has been under house arrest in his Swiss chalet since December 2009 pending the decision.

He is wanted in the US over a conviction for unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl.

Swiss Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf said the "restrictions on his liberty have been lifted."

A Swiss official said the US cannot appeal the decision.

The bulk of the USA couldn't care less...

...the rest don't even know who he is.

The man is a master class director, and has helped to further the art of cinema. He's also the only director (other than Scorsese) from the golden age of hollywood directors who is still making films that compare to the ones that made him famous.

Personally, I think it'd be a waste of time to jail him. Let him make movies, he's 70 years old ferchristsakes.

He's also a pederast and should have owned up to his vile behaviour over 30 years ago... but he ran like a coward. His art and old age aside, that doesn't excuse him from breaking the law.

I'm just interjecting to state that I have no opinion. Oh, that and this thread will simply follow the usual pattern of back and forth, A opinion vs B opinion when no one "wins", someone will bring in some sort of das verboten subject matter to gain the upper hand and this thread will be closed.

I just wanted to be a part of it before that happened. That is all, carry on my wayward sons.

I though the US had a statute of limitations for near enough everything other than murder?

He was convicted so its not a matter of the limitation running out, he ran from being sentenced - there is no limitation on that (not to mention he may be committing a continuing violation until he turns himself in for sentencing).

He also plied a 13 year old girl with drugs and alcohol then anally raped her. I guess that has some sort of moral statute of limitations??

I cannot imagine anyone with a daughter would share your thoughts on this. Then again, this IS OT so who knows

I was about to come back to edit it after it clicked he had already been convicted. Mondays aren't good days for me

The connection is loosely based on the fact that Ahab spends the whole book trying to catch Moby Dick and when he finally does harpoon him, Moby Dick gets away. The US has been trying for 33 odd years to get Polanski in a country which will honour a US request for extradition. They finally got the Swiss to agree to arrest him and then failed in their bid for extradition. As far as I know, the prosecutor wasn't dragged down to the depths of the oceans by Polanski nor was the US rammed and sunk by Polanski with only one survivor, but there's still time!
